Interdisciplinary, Critical Feminist Studies in Gender and Sexuality
The Department of Women and Gender Studies (WGST) aims to foster critical thinking through an interdisciplinary approach to the exploration of gender and sexuality, as they intersect with structures of power in a range of cultural, historical and geopolitical contexts. Housed in the historic Gates Woodruff Cottage, our faculty encourage students to critically engage with course materials and with the world around them at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Undergraduate
We offer an undergraduate major and minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, a Global Gender and Sexuality Certificate, as well as an LGBTQ Studies Certificate. Our courses examine how power and privilege function at the intersection of gender, sexuality, race, class, ability, nationality and colonialism. Students will gain foundational knowledge and skills in feminist theory and methods, while developing critical understanding of the varying forms of feminism across the globe, and the relationships between feminism and other movements for social justice.
Graduate
We offer an Master's degree in Gender and Sexuality as well as a Graduate Certificate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Our graduate programs engage students in an interdisciplinary education using a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches across the humanities and the social sciences to examine gender and sexuality through intersectional, decolonial, transnational, and social transformation frameworks.
