Alumni Stories
I was a DMG Spring 1967, President of Arnold Air Society, & Cadet Deputy Commander my senior year. Ellison Onizuka was a year behind me. I served 4 years as a nuclear munitions officer supporting B52 aircraft from 1967 - 1971, first at Beale AFB, CA & then at 15th AF Headquarters at March AFB, CA.
I’m Kelly Smith, Det 105 class of 2004. I’ve been an LRO since commissioning, had 3 deployments and 7 assignments, and currently a Sq/CC at Travis AFB, CA.
I loved my time at Det 105. I was a squadron commander my second semester junior year, and a member of Arnold Air Society. I was a Category 1M cadet, so I went to missile operations after graduation. I went to Minot where I became a flight commander's deputy and a combat crew commander.
My name is Matthew Rochon and I graduated in 1997. I felt well prepared for the Air Force and life in general as a result of Det 105. My first semester, I jumped into ROTC and other extra curricular activities, but then my grades suffered and the Commander, Colonel Ruotsala, really helped me focus on what was important and helped me push through to graduation with a pretty heavy course load in architectural engineering.
The grind doesn’t stop after commissioning, that’s just another milestone complete. You’re going to have to keep on pushing yourself to be the better version of you, and take care of your Airmen.
I’m extremely proud of my time at Det 105...still have a CU case on my phone/license plate holder too. By the way, is there still like a large wood plaque on the wall just prior to the main stairwell leading to the second floor of the detachment? My AAS pledge class made it back in the Spring of ‘97...time flies!
