Honors Program
Students graduate with honors in sociology after the successful completion and defense of an honors thesis. A thesis is a piece of original research and writing on a topic chosen by the student and agreed upon by his or her thesis adviser. Students typically enter the honors program in the fall semester of their senior year, and take two semesters of the Sociology Honors Seminar (3 credits per semester). Each honors student is responsible for identifying a faculty adviser who will serve as their primary mentor. Students are expected to meet with their faculty thesis adviser on a regular basis throughout the year. In addition, honors students meet biweekly as a group with the director to discuss the thesis in progress, discuss challenges or concerns, and provide support for one another.
There are multiple benefits associated with conducting an Honors Thesis. Honors students are highly competitive on the job market, as participation in the program gives them demonstrable experience in research and self-direction. Graduating with honors also signals to employers that they are among the university’s top students. In addition, for students considering graduate school, conducting an Honors Thesis provides them with a significant advantage, making them stand out among other applicants.
