Classics Department Summer Funding Policy
All graduate students are strongly encouraged to apply for summer funding. Students may only apply to the Department for summer funding if they have (successfully or unsuccessfully) applied elsewhere with the same project.
- Doctoral students are eligible to receive departmental summer funding for the summer following their fifth departmentally funded year (as well as in earlier years), but not thereafter.
- Doctoral students who finish their degree on time (after five years or fewer of departmental funding) are eligible for a one-time ‘dissertation completion stipend’, contingent upon the availability of funds for this purpose.
The committee recognizes two different funding categories:
- Funding costs above and beyond those associated with living in Boulder over the summer; for example, the costs of attending a field school or a language program.
- Supporting graduate students in good standing by allowing them to dedicate time to activities necessary to the completion of their degree, including study towards exams and other degree requirements and thesis- or dissertation-writing. Priority is given to PhD students, but MA students may also apply.
Applications for (1) will include a budget, description, and rationale for their participation in the projects they propose, whereas applications for (2) will be limited to a one-page description of their plans and how these plans relate to their progress to degree.
Both types of applications should be accompanied by documentation of application elsewhere for funding of the projects proposed or by an account of why they are not eligible for funding from other sources.
At the end of the summer, students who received funding will provide the ACGS with a brief written report (maximum one page) of the activities the funding supported and of their outcomes.
