CU-Boulder Announces Building Community Recognition Awards

Five outstanding members of the CU-Boulder campus, including students, faculty and staff, have been selected to receive the spring semester Building Community Recognition Awards. The awards, sponsored by the Building Community Committee, are given to campus members who show exceptional involvement, commitment and dedication to making the Boulder campus a more welcoming community. The honorees are:

Local Alumni Chapter Gives Top Students Tickets To CU

Three stellar seniors at Boulder area high schools are heading to the University of Colorado at Boulder thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Boulder Chapter of the Alumni Association, which is awarding each student $2,500 toward his or her tuition. The students and their families will receive their gifts at the Boulder Scholarship Reception Sunday, April 30, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The chapter also is supporting nine former scholarship recipients (who are now upperclassmen at CU) with $200 to put toward books for classes.

Phi Beta Kappa Kicks Off New Lecture Series April 14 At CU-Boulder

CU History Professors Co-Edit Book Delving Into The China Many Don't Know

China, the most populous nation in the world with more than 1.3 billion people and a history stretching back 3,500 years, has become an increasingly significant force in the world. ItÂ’s a nation just beginning to flex its economic and global muscle. But itÂ’s also a very complex nation facing problems, many of which receive little or no attention outside its borders, according to University of Colorado professors Timothy Weston and Lionel Jensen, co-editors of the book "China Beyond the Headlines," published by Rowman and Littlefield Publishers.

Longmont Kids Get Front Row Seats To See Colorado Performing Artists Online

Twenty-five children in Mr. Quezada's second grade class will have front row seats at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18. They will be clicking on Virtual Chautauqua and watching a video of Bonnie Phipps and her cast singing "Meatballs and Spaghetti," among other online performances. During their computer lab time, these children will join more than 100 of their schoolmates at Rocky Mountain Elementary at 800 E. 5th Ave. in Longmont, where teachers have used Virtual Chautauqua to introduce them to Colorado performing artists online.

CU Professor Delbert Elliott To Edit National Report On Youth Violence

Delbert Elliott, professor of sociology and director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been appointed scientific editor for the U.S. Surgeon General's Report to the Nation on Youth Violence. Elliott, a nationally recognized authority on violence prevention, will be among the authors of the report and also will be responsible for editing the report for scientific quality and merit. The report is due out at the end of the year.

Colorado High School Students Build Boats And Launch Careers At 'Spring Fling 2000'

Is it possible to build a boat out of plastic jugs, wood furring strips and duct tape in only one hour, and then use it for transportation? That's what hundreds of high school students across the state are eager to find out during the Seagate-sponsored Colorado Math Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Spring Fling 2000, set this year at the University of Colorado at Boulder, April 17-18.

CU-Boulder Professor Wins Awards For Geophysical Atmospheric Research

Peter Webster, professor and director of the CU-Boulder Program in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, has received a prestigious 2000 Fellowship award from the American Geophysical Union and the 2000 National Science Foundation Special Creativity Award. AGU is an organization of international geophysical scientists that annually recognizes members who have made outstanding science and community contributions. The award -- given to no more than 0.1 percent of AGU's 35,000 members -- will be presented to Webster June 2 at the organization's honors ceremony held in Washington, D.C.
