The College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder is accepting applications for the 34th annual High School Honors Institute and a new opportunity with the Royal Academy of Engineering's "Headstart" program at the University of Southampton, England.

Schools Invited To Apply For Free Drug Prevention Program Administered By CU-Boulder

Middle and junior high schools are invited to apply for three free years of training, technical assistance and materials to implement an exemplary program, Life Skills Training, which has been proven to reduce drug abuse and prevent violence. The program will be funded at 35 sites nationwide by a $4 million federal grant received by CU-Boulder's Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence. The funding is provided by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, a division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Peace Activist And Pediatrician Helen Caldicott To Speak At CU

Dr. Helen Caldicott, a world-renowned activist recognized for her opposition to the threat of global warfare, will speak at the University of Colorado at Boulder on April 5 on "The Ever Present Threat of Nuclear War." A pediatrician, Caldicott is speaking as part of the Gustavson Memorial Distinguished Lecture Series, established in honor of former professor, dean and acting CU President Reuben G. Gustavson. The event is sponsored by CU-Boulder and the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or CIRES.

Michael Moore To Speak April 3 In CU Student-Sponsored Event

The University of Colorado Cultural Events Board will present author and filmmaker Michael Moore on Tuesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in Boulder's Flatirons Theatre. Moore, the creator of "Roger and Me," "The Awful Truth" and "TV Nation," will speak on "Corporations and Multinationalism in the Third World."

High School Juniors Invited To Apply For Minority Business Program

High school juniors with diverse backgrounds are invited to apply for a free business leadership program being hosted this summer by the CU-Boulder College of Business. Applications will be accepted through April 13. Students will spend the week of June 17-23 on the Boulder campus learning about business and working on an advertising campaign for corporate sponsors. Students also will gain new computer skills and get a chance to network with business professionals.

March 31 CU Wizards Show To Explore Unique Ways Of Creating Music

The sounds of music -- how they are created and the rules of physics they follow -- will be the subject of the March 31 CU Wizards show for children to be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Physicist Jim Faller will use a group of both homemade and real instruments to demonstrate various aspects of "The Physics of Music." The homemade instruments are constructed from a wide range of materials including bamboo, garden hose, plastic pipe, redwood, funnels and doorknobs.

Former Acting U.S. Attorney General To Speak At CU-Boulder

Former acting United States Attorney General, Doug Melamed, will speak at the CU School of Law on Wednesday, April 4, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in room 154 of the Fleming Law Building. The speech, titled "The New Economy, Intellectual Property, and the Challenges for Antitrust: An Address by Former Acting Assistant Attorney General Doug Melamed," is sponsored by the law school's Silicon Flatirons Telecommunications Program.

More Teams, More Fun! CU Trivia Bowl Makes Change To Allow 64 Teams To Compete

In a great show of support for the successful return of CU's Trivia Bowl, Program Council has amended its original decision to cap team applications at 48 teams with eight alternates, allowing all 64 applying teams to compete in this year's bowl. The 2001 Trivia Odyssey, April 2-6, will be a traditional single-elimination tournament.

Jimmie's Chicken Shack To Perform At Trivia Bowl At CU-Boulder April 5

Program Council will offer a free concert for CU-Boulder students as part of the 2001 Trivia Bowl entertainment featuring Jimmie's Chicken Shack on Thursday, April 5, at 8 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom. Jimmie's Chicken Shack is the band behind the hit, "Do Right," which received extensive airtime on MTV and radio stations throughout the country. The song was featured on the band's most recent album, "Bring Your Own Stereo."

CU-Boulder Businesss Professor Elected To International Tourism Academy

Richard Perdue, professor of tourism management at the University of Colorado at Boulder's College of Business, has been elected to the International Academy for the Study of Tourism. Membership in the prestigious academy is limited to 75 scholars worldwide and is based on a candidate's career research achievements. Upon election, Perdue was chosen to serve a two-year term as secretary of the academy.
