Tim Gill, Software Entrepreneur, Philanthropist And Civil Rights Advocate To Speak At CU April 24

Tim Gill, founder and former chairman of Denver-based Quark Inc., will speak on "Being Gay In The Business World" at the University of Colorado at Boulder April 24 at the Museum Collections Building, formerly the Geography Building, room W-100. The talk is at 3 p.m. followed by a reception in Dinosaur Hall of the Henderson Museum. Gill is a graduate of the CU-Boulder College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where he earned a degree in applied mathematics in 1976. He went on to build Quark into a $1 billion computer software company.

Boston Marathon Contender Favored To Win April 15 Scores Highest Ever In Fitness At CU Lab

Boulder resident Silvio Guerre, a native of Ecuador who finished second in the last two Boston Marathons, recently scored the highest fitness level of anyone ever tested at CU-Boulder's kinesiology and applied physiology department. The physiological test was conducted at the Human Cardiovascular Research Laboratory on campus on April 8. Guerre is among the favorites to win the 106th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15.

CU-Boulder Professor Gilbert White Wins AAG Lifetime Achievement Award

Gilbert F. White, distinguished professor emeritus of geography at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has won 2002 Lifetime Achievement Honors from the Association of American Geographers. The association's highest award was presented at the annual AAG meeting in Los Angeles last month for White's "half-century plus of pioneering research on human-environmental resource issues and his commitment to improving our understanding of the earth and all life."

CU Student Invited To Perform At Prestigious Dance Festival

Yuki Ojika, a junior dance major in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been invited to perform a solo of her own choreography at the National American College Dance Festival to be held May 13-15 at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Ojika's dance is the sixth to be invited to the prestigious biennial festival from CU-Boulder since 1981.

CU's Fiske Planetarium To Present "Colorado Skies" On April 23

On April 23, Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Boulder will present "Colorado Skies," a live show featuring some of the stellar sights seen in Coolrado's night sky. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Visitors will see images of the night sky over Colorado as it appears to the unaided eye, through telescopes and in wavelengths of light that human eyes can't see. They also will learn about upcoming events in the night sky, and will track the movement of planets through the skies of this month and beyond.

Native American Awareness Week At CU-Boulder April 15-19 Features Comedian, Code-Talker

A nationally known comedian and a Navajo code-talker are among the featured guests for the University of Colorado at Boulder's celebration of Native American Awareness Week, April 15-19. Comedian Charlie Hill, a veteran of six NBC Tonight Show appearances, will present a 7 p.m. show in the University Memorial Center's multipurpose room April 15. Recognized as one of America's best American Indian comics, Hill doesn't shy away from discussing issues and stereotypes in his sets.

CU Law School Alumni To Be Honored At Awards Banquet

The University of Colorado at Boulder School of Law will hold its 21st Annual Alumni Awards Banquet on April 13 at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities. The ceremony, which will honor alumni for "distinguished achievement," begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and the presentation of awards an hour later. South And Southeast Asian Art Focus Of Fine Arts Photography Exhibit And Symposium At CU-Boulder

A photography exhibition, "Hanoi and its Painters," featuring the work of Ronald Bernier, professor of art history at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will be on display at the Boulder Public Library April 14 through May 8. The exhibit will be held in conjunction with a public symposium on South and Southeast Asian Art highlighting the research and work of nationally and internationally renowned scholars on April 17-18 at the Fiske Planetarium and the University Memorial Center.

Government-University Partnership In The Era Of Catastrophic Terrorism Is Topic Of Lewis Branscomb Lecture

Lewis M. Branscomb, professor emeritus of Harvard University, will lecture on "Government-University Partnership in the Era of Catastrophic Terrorism" on Thursday, April 18, at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The talk will begin at 3:30 p.m. in room 140 of the Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry Building. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is part of the 40th anniversary celebration of JILA, a joint institute of CU-Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which Branscomb co-founded.
