The surface of the sun is covered with transient storms, high and low pressure zones and swirling wind flows that vary from day to day like weather patterns on Earth's surface, according to new results by University of Colorado at Boulder researchers using the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO. The results are being presented at the spring American Astronomical Society meeting held in Albuquerque, N.M., June 2 to June 6. SOHO is a joint satellite mission between NASA and the European Space Agency.

Colorado Japanese Language School Graduates Recount War Experiences At CU-Boulder June 8

A roundtable discussion on the experiences of graduates and teachers of the Boulder Japanese Language School during World War II and afterward will be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder on June 8 from 10 a.m. to noon at Old Main Chapel. According to Lynn Kalinauskas, associate director of the Center for Asian Studies, graduates of the Boulder Navy Language School played a key role in establishing the field of Japanese Studies in the post-war period, as well as contributing to U.S.-Japanese relations in various other fields.

Rare Partial Solar Eclipse To Be Visible Over Colorado June 10

Barring the common late afternoon thunderstorms of June, Coloradans will get a rare chance to see the moon slide across the face of the sun during a partial solar eclipse on June 10. Solar eclipses usually occur twice a year, but are not always visible from the United States, according to experts at Fiske Planetarium and Sommers-Bausch Observatory at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In fact, the next chance to see a solar eclipse in Colorado won't be until May 20, 2012, according to Robert Stoller, operations manager at Fiske Planetarium.

CU-Boulder Hosts 60th Reunion Of U.S. Navy Japanese/Oriental Language School June 7

Alumni of the U.S. Navy Japanese/Oriental Language School will reunite at the University of Colorado at Boulder 60 years to the month after the Japanese Language School was moved to Boulder in 1942. Attendees will be welcomed at a luncheon on Friday, June 7, where a color guard will present the flag. The flag will be retired at the conclusion of the reunion Sunday, June 9. A plaque honoring the instructors and graduates of the school will be dedicated in the University Memorial Center at 4:30 p.m. on June 7. The dedication is free and open to the public.

Peggy Tucker Joins UMC Administration At CU-Boulder

The University Memorial Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder has announced the addition of Peggy L. Tucker to its business division as a senior accountant. Tucker will oversee purchasing and accounts payable and receivable and will supervise three staff members. She will report to Business Manager Mary E. Covell. Tucker has worked in accounting positions at CU-Boulder since 1986 and is an expert in purchasing. She graduated from CU-Boulder with a degree in psychology in 1985.

CU-Boulder Marketing Professor Named Head Of National Society

University of Colorado at Boulder marketing Professor Paul Herr has been elected president of the Society for Consumer Psychology. The society, a division of the American Psychological Association, is the premier organization for academics engaged in the study of marketing and consumer psychology. Membership is comprised of marketing practitioners and research scholars from top universities. He was named president-elect of the organization in 2001.

CU Parents Association Hosts Summer Orientation Dinners For Parents Of New Students

Anonymous Gift Boosts CU-Boulder Music Library's CD Collection By 12 Percent

An anonymous donor has contributed 1,500 classical compact discs to the University of Colorado at Boulder's Music Library, increasing the library's CD collection by more than 12 percent. The CDs are primarily piano music and will make the library's holdings of recorded classical piano music one of the most complete in the country. The gift will be known as the Ian Gindes Collection, in honor of a former student of the donor.
