Two CU-Boulder Professors Win Fulbright Awards

Bryan Pellom, a research assistant professor in CU-Boulder's Center for Spoken Language Research and Thomas Zeiler, professor and chair of CU-Boulder's history department, have been awarded Fulbright Scholar grants to teach and conduct research internationally. Pellom, an expert in speech recognition software and author of the large-vocabulary continuous speech recognition system, SONIC, which is used in many CSLR research projects, will travel to Finland in fall 2004.

Study: Dinosaurs Died Within Hours After Asteroid Hit Earth 65 Million Years Ago

According to new research led by a University of Colorado at Boulder geophysicist, a giant asteroid that hit the coast of Mexico 65 million years ago probably incinerated all the large dinosaurs that were alive at the time in only a few hours, and only those organisms already sheltered in burrows or in water were left alive.

CU-Boulder School Of Education Receives $1.5 Million Endowed Chair

Bob and Judy Charles have given a $1.5 million gift to create an endowed chair at the University of Colorado at Boulder's School of Education, the education school's first endowed chair. The Bob and Judy Charles Endowed Chair in Education will permanently fund a faculty position in the School of Education, while also providing additional research funds for the honorary recipient of the chair. Margaret Eisenhart, a professor of educational anthropology and research methodology who has been at CU-Boulder since 1987, has been named as the chair's first holder.

Top Drawer Society Sculpture To Be Unveiled At The CU-Boulder Libraries May 25th

The venerable card catalog has been transformed from a piece of outdated furniture to the hallmark of a new donor society at the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries. The sculpture will be unveiled Tuesday, May 25, at 4:30 p.m. in the Norlin Library east entrance. The 15-member Libraries Development Advisory Board will attend.

Leeds School Of Business Professor Elected President Of Tourism Academy

Professor Richard Perdue of the University of Colorado at Boulder Leeds School of Business has been elected president of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism. The academy is the premier scholarly organization in the field of tourism with only 75 elected members representing the top tourism scholars internationally. The academy's goal is to further the scholarly research and professional investigation of tourism.

Aerial Photography At CU-Boulder Rescheduled

One of two sessions of aerial photography at the University of Colorado at Boulder was postponed earlier this week because of overcast weather conditions. It has been rescheduled for Friday, May 21st, weather permitting. If adverse weather conditions prevail Friday, it will be conducted on Saturday, May 22nd.

CU-Boulder Students Awarded Puksta Scholarships For Civic Involvement

Eight students with a passion for public service have been selected for the Puksta Scholars Program, a civic education and leadership program at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Matthew de Caussin, Travis Macy, Raven Semien, Kathleen Krohne, Jennifer Young, Diana Silva, Amy Hutmacher and Erin Fischer were chosen for their commitment to civic engagement, socially responsible citizenship, leadership and encouragement of positive social change. They join nine others receiving $4,500 scholarships in the Puksta program for a total of 17 scholars in the program.

CU-Boulder To Conduct Aerial Photography Of The Campus

The University of Colorado at Boulder will be conducting aerial photography over the Boulder campus and surrounding areas on May 18 and May 20, weather permitting. The helicopter flights will begin at approximately 7 a.m. on both days and are expected to last about two hours each. The aircraft will be hovering and circling the main CU campus, Williams Village complex and possibly the Chautauqua area. The morning flights are required to capture the early morning light on the Flatirons.

Leeds School Of Business Launches Center For Business And Society

The CU-Boulder Leeds School of Business is launching a Center for Business and Society to provide a broad approach to business education and examine the roles and contributions of business to society, Dean Steven Manaster announced. "The Center for Business and Society aligns with the Leeds School's mission to expand the scope of business education by creating leaders who take a broad perspective on the role of businesses in society," Manaster said.

CU Space Scientist To Speak To Denver High School Students Â鶹ÊÓƵ Cassini Mission To Saturn

Editor's Note: West High School is located in Denver at 951 Elati St., one block west of Speer Boulevard between West 10th and West Ninth avenues. The event is not open to the public, but reporters and photographers are welcome to attend. Science students at West High School in Denver on May 18 will hear details about the Cassini Mission to Saturn from one of the mission's lead scientists, Larry Esposito, a professor of planetary science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Esposito will deliver his presentation at 9:30 a.m. inside the school's main auditorium.
