CU-Boulder Science Â鶹ÊÓƵy Program Allows Kids To Learn While They Play

The University of Colorado at Boulder's Science Â鶹ÊÓƵy Program, now in its 10th year, will once again provide a number quality education programs for K-12 students from around Colorado. Following are some highlights of programs offered this summer: o Girls on the Wild Side: Outdoor Adventures and Explorations in Science, July 20-24, offers girls the chance to actively participate and excel in natural science, outdoor exploration and adventure. Campers will have the chance to rock climb and raft while learning local geology and river ecology.

CU-Boulder To Graduate 1,030 Students On August 8

An estimated 1,030 students will receive diplomas Aug. 8 from the University of Colorado at Boulder in outdoor commencement exercises. Of the diplomas presented, approximately 674 will be bachelor's degrees, 233 will be master's degrees and 123 will be doctoral degrees. The ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. with a procession of graduates, faculty and administrators led by Dean of Libraries James Williams as commencement marshal.

CU-Boulder Names New Dean Of Education

William B. Stanley, professor and chair of the department of educational development at the University of Delaware in Newark, has been named dean of education at the University of Colorado at Boulder, pending approval by the CU Board of Regents. The appointment, to be effective Sept. 1, will be considered by the CU Board of Regents at its Aug. 6 meeting in Boulder.

Minority Graduate Students Attend Leadership Seminar at CU

Building the skills of tomorrow's business leaders is the focus of the Andersen Consulting Leadership Seminar, taking place at the University of Colorado at Boulder, July 15-19. During the seminar, 26 minority graduate students from 12 universities will enhance their critical thinking, leadership, teamwork and networking skills.

CU's McNair Scholars Program Accepting Fall Applications

The McNair Scholars Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder is accepting fall applications through Aug. 15. Designed to help students underrepresented in graduate education to attain doctoral degrees, the program is named for Ronald McNair, an African-American astronaut killed in the 1986 Challenger explosion.

President Clinton Appoints CU Professor To Deputy Undersecretary Position

Delores Etter, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been appointed U.S. deputy undersecretary of defense for science and technology by President Clinton. Etter will manage the budget of the Department of Defense Science and Technology Program and serve as the U.S. representative to the NATO Research and Technology Board. Her responsibilities will include developing technologies for the U.S. military and oversight of all federally funded Research and Development Centers.

News Tip Sheet - CU-Boulder, Community Food Share To Harvest Campus Garden For Needy

CU-Boulder faculty, staff and students and Community Food Share volunteers will harvest the first crop of vegetables from a garden planted on campus in early June and donate the food to needy Boulder County people. Campus and Community Food Share volunteers will harvest the first crop of lettuce, radishes and beets on Monday, July 13, beginning at 10 a.m. The Food Share garden is located near the front door of the CU Recreation Center.

CU-Boulder Students Invest Their Summer In The Lives Of Others

Thirty students from CU-Boulder will spend their summer vacation working in a Denver homeless shelter and helping revitalize a small fishing village in Mexico as part of the International and National Voluntary Service Training Program. The INVST program is a two-year commitment combining community service with academic work and leadership training. Most students who are a part of the program are juniors or seniors.

Strong relationships with new emerging growth companies, combined with dynamic business students have made this program a success, said Denis Nock, director the CU-Boulder center headquartered in the College of Business and Administration.

CU Chaos And Complexity Center Announces New Business Network

The Colorado Center for Chaos and Complexity has formed a business network that is expected to draw participants from local and national companies, government agencies and non-profit organizations. Based at the University of Colorado at Boulder's Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, the interdisciplinary center has applications for real-world problems ranging from earthquakes, landslides and weather to climate systems, superconductors and the stock market.
