The Honors Program and the Department of Women and Gender Studies are sponsoring a talk on “Growing Up Queer: Kids and the Remaking of LGBTQ Identity” by Professor Mary Robertson on April 3, as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series.
Based on interviews and three years of ethnographic research at an LGBTQ youth drop-in center, Robertson will discuss the changing waysyoung people are now becoming LGBTQ-identified in the U.S. By focusing on the voices and stories of youths themselves, she will show how young people understand their sexual and gender identities, their interest in queer media, and the role family plays in their lives. Moving beyond an oversimplified examination of teenage sexuality, Robertson’s work illuminates the exciting yet complicated terrain of queer adolescence.
Robertson is an assistant professor of sociology at California State University, San Marcos.
The event will be held at the British & Irish Studies Room in Norlin Library. Refreshments will be served at 5p.m., so please arrive early for a seat! Robertson’s talk begins at 5:30 p.m.
