Students at the University of Colorado at Boulder will celebrate Engineering Days April 12 through April 16 with a series of fun and challenging events including robotics and rocket competitions and the annual College Egg Drop.
Hosted by the University of Colorado Engineering Council and sponsored by various corporations and professional societies, Engineering Days is an annual celebration of the engineering profession and a chance for students to apply their engineering skills in fun and creative ways.
The weeklong festival also includes a knowledge bowl, X-Box tournament and a carnival, and students can take advantage of aromatherapy and chair massages in the Engineering Center Lobby to get them in shape for approaching final exams.
The annual Egg Drop will be held on Thursday, April 15, with high school entries starting at noon and college entries starting at 2 p.m. in the courtyard at the base of the Engineering Center Office Tower. The event challenges students to design a device or mechanism that will protect an egg during an eight-story drop from the top floor of the Office Tower. Cash prizes will be given for the best use of an engineering principle, most creative engineering design, most destroyed contraption with an unbroken egg, the slowest falling entry, and the dean/faculty choice.
Contests in which students design and build robots and balsa wood rockets will go throughout the week. The Robotics Competition, in which students maneuver their finished robots through an obstacle course, will be on Wednesday, April 14, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Engineering Center Lobby. Students will launch their balsa wood rockets in the Vertical Takeoff Challenge on Friday, April 16, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the courtyard of the Engineering Quadrangle.
Pre-registration is required for some events. A complete schedule and description of events is available at .
