The Office of Diversity and Equity at the University of Colorado at Boulder awarded six faculty, staff and students the 2002 Equity and Excellence Awards on Thursday, April 25, at the 17th Annual Equity and Excellence Graduation Ceremony and Awards Banquet.
A special award was presented to Ofelia Miramontes, associate vice chancellor for diversity and equity, by students in the McNair Scholars Program. McNair prepares selected CU-Boulder undergraduates to study at the doctoral level. The scholars' award acknowledged Miramontes' support of their efforts to advance to a graduate education.
Equity and Excellence awards are given to faculty and staff whose work best exemplifies a commitment to promoting the principles of academic excellence, cultural pluralism and diversity in the university community. Students are selected who demonstrate outstanding service to the university community and within the multiculturally diverse communities on campus, in addition to demonstrating academic excellence. Awardees received a certificate and a $250 award.
The 2002 recipients are:
-Undergraduate student awards: Noah Schabaker and Xochitl Chavez
-Graduate Student award: Isabel Martinez
-Staff awards: Rose Garcia and Kenneth Conner
-Faculty award: Thomas Mayer
