A University of Colorado at Boulder student has been named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar through a selective national merit scholarship competition.
Alan Arrowsmith, a junior majoring in biochemistry and mathematics from Waterloo, Ontario, was one of 316 students awarded scholarships this year by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.
Arrowsmith will receive up to $7,500 for his tuition, fees, books and room and board expenses for the 1998-99 academic year.
"It聮s an honor to receive such a prestigious scholarship," said Arrowsmith, 21, who plans to attend graduate school after completing his bachelor聮s degree. Before then, Arrowsmith plans to do an internship with Nexstar Pharmaceuticals and to continue his work as a volunteer firefighter with the Pinebrook Hills Fire Department and Boulder County聮s wildland fire crew.
The Goldwater Scholarship is a federally endowed scholarship program for undergraduate sophomores and juniors designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.
The 1998 Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,186 mathematics, science and engineering students nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. Of the scholarships awarded, 183 went to men, 133 to women, and virtually all intend to obtain a doctorate as their degree objective.
Arrowsmith is one of just three Colorado students to win the prestigious scholarship. The others are Tiffany Hall, a student at Colorado College, and Isaac Rutenberg, a student at the Colorado School of Mines.
