CU-Boulder student volunteers will participate in a number of service activities throughout National Volunteer Week, April 19-25. National Volunteer Week honors people who participate in volunteer community service and calls attention to the on-going need for individuals and groups to serve in their communities.
CU-Boulder students actively volunteer their time and energy to numerous projects and organizations throughout the year. A sampling of the CU-Boulder student volunteer projects that coincide with National Volunteer Week fellows:
CU-Boulder students will read books with their "Reading Buddies" in the Children聮s Section of the Boulder Public Library on Monday, April 20, at 4:30 p.m., and Tuesday, April 21, at 6 p.m. This program pairs CU students, many of whom are members of the Farrand Academic Program, with Boulder children to help them one-on-one with reading and writing. CU-Boulder students meet with their Buddies once each week throughout the semester.
The Spring 1998 Boulder Greenbucks Program will sponsor volunteer environmental and beautification activities from April 20 through May 3. CU students will participate in activities ranging from cleaning up the Hill neighborhood to landscaping at University Hill Elementary. A full schedule of activities is attached.
On April 22, Mortar Board is sponsoring a day of activities focusing on environmental awareness and literacy for Boulder County middle school students in conjunction with Earth Day. From 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., more than 160 CU-Boulder volunteers, along with community members, will work with approximately 150 middle school students during workshops, lunch, and a dramatic performance in the Glenn Miller Ballroom at the University Memorial Center.
National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an Executive Order establishing the week as an annual celebration. Every President since Nixon has supported the week by signing a Presidential Proclamation.
