What is housing security?
Housing security is access to safe, stable and affordable housing.
What is housing insecurity?
The Basic Needs Center defines housing insecurity as someone who is experiencing one of more of the following circumstances:
- Unhoused (living in a tent, an encampment or otherwise not in a permanent structure)
- Living in a vehicle
- Couchsurfing or otherwise temporarily living with others
- Living in an uninhabitable residence (lack of heating, presence of mold or asbestos, etc.)
- *Experiencing safety concerns such as domestic violence or interpersonal violence
- Otherwise unable to access housing that meets basic needs
*The Basic Needs Center is not a crisis center. Students facing violence in the home should contact 911, the Office of Victim Assistance 24/7 support line at 303-492-8855 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233.
How to refer a student
Anyone can refer a student to the BNC, including staff, faculty or other students. You can make referrals by contacting us:
