CU PREP (Professional Research Experience Program)
The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado at Boulder. The program hires CU undergraduates and graduate students as well as researchers to work in NIST labs to gain experiential education alongside NIST researchers. Specific labs include but not limited to: Physical Measurement Laboratory, the Communications Technology Laboratory, the Material Measurement Laboratory, and the Information Technology Laboratory.
For almost thirty years, CU-Boulder and NIST have jointly run a very successful Professional Research Experience Program at the NIST Boulder Laboratories. Hundreds of students and post-doctoral associates have participated in this program since 1994. Students have often stated that their experiences at NIST were one of major highlights of their education and many times NIST researchers have praised participant contributions to their laboratories.
NIST-Boulder is one of the top physics laboratories in the world, especially in quantum science and engineering, precision measurement, and high-speed communications. PREP recruits some of the top young scientists and engineers in the world to work closely with NIST researchers. Together, they create scientific discoveries that help maintain U.S. technological leadership.
