Scholarship Ceremony

With students, donors, speakers, and the dean each sharing their passion for education, the annual School of Education Scholarship Awards Ceremony united and honored more than 136 scholarship and fellowship recipients and supporters on Friday, Oct. 27.

Astrid Clough McDowell and David Clough, sponsors of the Katinka Ponce Clough Elementary Spanish Teaching Scholarship, shared their passion for education and their inspiration, Silvia Katinka Ponce Gallegos de Clough, their late mother and wife, respectively, and a passionate advocate for both the Spanish language and teaching.

Their encouraging words flowed nicely into a speech from teacher education student and East High student teacher Jonathan Delgado, whose impassioned speech began with Buenas Tardes continued to inspire by encouraging the audience to use education as a means to enact social change and ended with a standing ovation from faculty, staff, students, and supporters alike.

“Let that passion for education become the triggering factor that will allow us to stop making excuses and start making changes,” Delgado said.

The School of Education Scholarship Program has come a long way since its inception in 1993 when five scholarships totaling $2,500 were awarded to five students. This year, 136 scholarships and fellowships totaled $545,711 in support, and the ceremony celebrated student accomplishments and recognized the generosity of supporters.
