The American Educational Research Association's (AERA) Bilingual Education Research Special Interest Group (SIG) honored Kathy Escamilla, professor of Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity and assistant director of the BUENO Center for Multicultural Education, with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the AERA annual conference that took place April 3-7, 2014 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. SIG President Millie Gort presented Escamilla with the award “in recognition of sustained outstanding scholarship and notable impact in the field of bilingual education, service, and advocacy at the national, state and local levels and mentorship of junior scholars.”

Dean Lorrie Shepard notes, “Decades before it was popular to conduct high-impact research in the context of practice, Professor Escamilla was a model, demonstrating to all of us how it is possible to conceptualize and carry out this kind of work. Her current work, entitled Literacy Squared, focuses explicitly on biliteracy and also recognizes the changing contexts of ‘emergent bilinguals’ who have access to two languages and can use each as a resource for learning to comprehend, speak, read, and write in the other.”
