CLAS 4130: Greek & Roman Comedy

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the comic theater of ancient Greece and Rome. We read and discuss many types of plays, from family sitcoms to political comedies, and we use digital media to reconstruct the ancient theater-going experience. We also consider broader questions about the nature of comedy itself and its relationship with human experience across time. No Greek or Latin is required.

Greek听 and Roman myths captivate the imagination and reveal the moral, religious, philosophical, and psychological concerns of those who told them. They play a huge part in the fine arts and cultural legacy of Greece and Rome, and they are just plain fun stories!听 This course approaches Greek and Roman myths through literature, art, and selections from a textbook. We will discuss epic poems, narrative hymns, tragedies, and vase paintings. All works taught in English translation.

CLAS/ANTH 3009: Modern Issues, Ancient Times: Piracy, Ancient and Modern: Agents of Change in the Maritime World

This course examines the phenomenon of pirates and piracy during the Late Hellenistic period (2nd-1st c. BC) in the ancient Mediterranean and in the TransAtlantic era (1690-1750 AD). We will attempt to identify piracy's underlying causes within a broader historical and economic framework. Students will learn to handle the various forms of evidence for piracy and to investigate piracy as a social and cultural subculture.
