Event Description:
This discussion examined issues such as how various forms of Asian popular culture have responded to or engaged with other forms of national and hemispheric popular cultures, such as those in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and the Pacific, how Asian American and Asian diaspora communities have drawn on Asian popular cultures, and the implications of homegrown Asian popular cultures circulating within and beyond Asia.听Topics will include听fashion, music, and food in Asian pop culture.
Our 3 guest speakers were听scholars on topics such as fashion, food, and music in Asian culture. Carla Jones, PhD, is听a Professor at CU Boulder and co-editor of听. Dr. 听is a Professor of American Studies, Chair of the American Studies Department, and Director of the Honors Program at the University of Hawai鈥榠 at M膩noa. She听is currently developing听an interdisciplinary critical reader about the K-pop group BTS with Patty Ahn, Michelle Cho, Rani Neutill, Mimi Thi Nguyen, and Yutian Wong. Dr. Anita Mannur, Professor at听Miami University, recently published her book,听. This event will be moderated by听Tim Oakes, professor of Geography and Center for Asian Studies Interim Faculty Director.

Dr. Carla Jones is a Professor, Graduate Director,听and the past President of the听.听Her research听focuses on听the cultural politics of appearance in urban Indonesia, with particular focus on femininity, domesticity, aesthetics, and Islam.听She is the co-editor of听.听Her current work situates anxieties about Islamic style in the context of broader debates about corruption and exposure.
Vernadette Gonzalez, PhD, is a Professor of American Studies, Chair of the American Studies Department, and Director of the Honors Program at the University of Hawai鈥榠 at M膩noa. Her areas of research include studies of tourism and militarism, transnational cultural studies, feminist theory, postcolonial studies, and cultural studies with a focus on Asia and the Pacific. She is currently developing an interdisciplinary critical reader about the K-pop group BTS with Patty Ahn, Michelle Cho, Rani Neutill, Mimi Thi Nguyen, and Yutian Wong.
Dr. Anita Mannur is Professor of English and Asian American Studies at Miami University, and was the听editor-in-chief of the听Journal of Asian American Studies听from 2014 to 2017. Dr. Mannur focuses her听research on the intersections that food has with culture, race, and gender. She has recently published her book,听, which听examines Asian and Arab American cultural production in which听forms of intimacy occur within the home via eating and cooking.
