Each year the Department of Applied Mathematics sponsors undergraduate teams in the international Mathematical Contest in Modeling.  The contest lasted 4 days from Feb 5-Feb 9, 2015.   During this time, each team of 3 students selected one of four problems, they did the research, constructed mathematical and then numerical models, and wrote a complete report. The modeling contest is essentially a mini-research project done in just 96 hours. This year, we had a record 7 teams (21 students) participate.   Anne Dougherty and Bengt Fornberg organize the teams and provide several training sessions.  The contest results were just posted and two of our teams were designated as Outstanding. CU Boulder also had two Outstanding teams in 2012 and 2013.  And, even more remarkably, a total of 15 Outstanding designations since 2000.  This is a testament to our excellent students and exceptionally strong undergraduate programs!
Overall, there were 7636 teams from around the world with 418 teams from the US on problems A and B. Â There were a total of 10 papers designated as Outstanding and CU had two of them! Â
The website with the official results, problem statements, and a press release can be found at:
CU’s participants and results are below.  Applied math recruits participants from all majors and that almost every engineering major is represented. In fact, the best teams are those with a variety of backgrounds and skills. Â
