URL principles
We design our URLs to be user-friendly and to follow a consistent, predictable format.
URLs should be clear and unambiguous. They should be easy to read, type and share.
Our URLs should always:
- use only lowercase letters
- use hyphens in place of spaces
- contain no spaces, underscores or any URL-encoded characters
Some types of sites are grouped under a top level path:
We have URL patterns that group similar websites under a common structure. The purpose of URL patterns is to make websites findable for users, provide an organized structure for search engine robots to find and categorize our websites as well as the ability to create search patterns to allow users to narrow their search. It is an important structure to maintain when we have vast amounts of websites under .  Our job is to implement processes that help organize and make it easy to find websites via search and grouping like sites under a top level path will do just that.
Here is a listing of some of the most common top level path URLs.

Changes to URL Patterns During Server Migration in 2020
The Web Express team is starting a year long process of migrating the entire service to a cloud based server infrastructure. During this process our URL patterns will flip to a subdomain pattern. This means that our groups of sites will change:
During the migration process, redirects will be implemented from the old URL to the new URL. The URL patterns will give us greater flexibility in the future to meet the specific needs of different groups - particularly around search and findability.
