Successful limited launch of all-online MS-EE

Teams across Strategic Resources and Support have been working hand-in-hand with the College of Engineering and Applied Science and Academic Affairs to launch the world’s first globally scalable Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)-based electrical engineering master’s degree (MS-EE).

The innovative degree was approved in 2018 and is designed to prepare students for senior engineering roles in industry. It is particularly unique in its flexibility and its performance-based admissions standards. Other differentiators include tuition assessed on a pay-as-you-go, per-course basis and smaller course topics that aid students in completion and persistence.

“The launch required fast work, and work in areas outside of our traditional course registration, billing and information technology infrastructure,” said Chief Operating Officer, Kelly Fox. “The teams were ready to experiment, test, invent and re-invent to make this successful.”

Participating students began taking classes on October 21, and all of the initial courses reached enrollment capacity. The program launched with smaller class sizes to allow an analysis of the supporting systems as well as gaining valuable insights into the engagement of a new type of CU Boulder student.

The program is expected to launch a full 24 courses on December 13, with more to follow in March of 2020.

Collaboration between Strategic Relations and Communications, the Office of Information Technology, the Bursar’s Office, Office of the Registrar and the Office of Data Analytics are key to the partnership with the Office of Academic Innovation and the digital initiatives program, and to the success of this innovative approach to teaching and learning.
