ÌýEDUC 2919: Renewing Democracy in Schools and CommunitiesÌý

OurÌýCU undergraduate course is for students who are passionate about youth voice for everyday democracy and social change.Ìý We study theory to transform ourselves and society and learn with middle and high school youth in Boulder Valley School District who are leading change in their own schools and community.Ìý Together we work to understand and address complex issues relevant toÌýyouth such asÌýracism in schools, support for immigrant youth and families, addressing global warming, and access to higher education.Ìý

EDUC 2919 students meet on twice a week on campus (currently virtuall) during Monday and Wednesday for 75Ìýminute seminars and on Fridays students meet offÌýcampus at a local middleÌýor high school for 90Ìýminutes for a the Public Achievement practicum (occuring virtually due to COVID-19).Ìý Our course is also open for high school students,Ìýcommunity college students and community memebers to take through our extraordinary enrollment partnership.ÌýÌýDuring the weekly seminars, studentsÌýconsider the relationshipÌýbetween democracy, education, and social change.Ìý

Our course objectives are:

  1. Theories: Develop understanding of and apply theories of demoracy, education, diversity and social change
  2. Democracy in Action: Observe and practice democracy and leadership through Public Achievement each week;
  3. Public Skills:Ìý Develop and demonstrate public skills including community based research,Ìýdeliberation on complex social issues, public narrative, and projectÌýfacilitation.
  4. Power and Identity: UnderstandÌýconcepts of identity, power, privilege, oppression,Ìýintersectionality and diversity with attiention toÌýeducation, institutions, and public work.
  5. Moblize k-12 Students: Support students and PA Teams as they identify aÌýrole and skills and citizens whoÌýaddress complex social issues in their schools and community
