CU Psychology and Neuroscience graduate student Balbir Singh (Social) and his mentor Associate Professor Josh Correll (Social) were in the news, being interviewed for an article in Colorado Arts and Sciences Magazine about some research that was published recently in Social Cognition. The research examined the effects of cognitive load on a shoot/don't-shoot task in a first-person shooter simulation. The study demonstrated that the effects of practice in the task were negated when a higher cognitive load was placed on participants in the task. That is, under higher cognitive load participants were more likely to shoot unarmed Black targets vs. white targets, and failed to shoot armed white targets at the same rate as armed Black targets.
