CU Psychology and Neuroscience Professor Ryan Bachtell (Behavioral Neuroscience) was in the news as a result of his lab's recent publication in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology. The research suggests that consumption of caffeine as an adolescent could result in longer-term anxiety-related disorders even after caffeine ingestion is stopped. Using a rat model, his lab demonstrated that adolescent rats hydrated with caffeinated water displayed behaviors associated with anxiety disorders and exhibited these behaviors after the caffeine was removed. Moreover, the research also found that plasma levels of corticosterone, a stress hormone, remained elevated for a full week after caffeine was removed from their diet.
