I research language and culture, the ways in which they intersect, and the ways they play out in the social practices of the classroom. My particular interests are in the field of adult education and non-traditional adult students: students who are English language learners, may not have completed high school, or are first generation college attendees. I am currently analyzing narratives from adult students returning to school following an interruption in their schooling. My future research will include analyzing classroom discourse from sociolinguistic and critical discourse analysis perspectives, illuminating how language matters to students, and how language can subtly encourage or discourage students from continuing their education.
