From CBC Radio: When humans return to the moon as soon as 2024, their missions will be vastly different from those of the Apollo pioneers.

The Apollo program changed the world without significantly changing the surface of the moon, but the next phase of lunar development will be multinational, long-term and commercially driven.

According to Jack Burns, director of the NASA-funded Network for Exploration and Space Science, the countries and companies going will develop unexplored lunar territory, mine resources and make the moon a base for future space exploration.

"I think it certainly was exciting in 1969," said Burns on Day 6. "It will be exciting again when we return." Listen now...

From Science: In the undulating, dust-covered Descartes Highlands, 380 kilometers southwest of Tranquility Base, where Apollo 11 landed half a century ago, a lonely gold-plated telescope has sat inert since 24 April 1972, when Apollo 16 astronauts John Young and Charles Duke blasted off the surface and left it behind. It was a small part of their 3-day mission, but a milestone for astronomers: the first observatory on another world.

The designer of the telescope was George Carruthers, a young researcher at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., who had made his name building ultraviolet (UV) telescopes for sounding rockets, which make short flights above the UV-blocking atmosphere. A big question at the time was whether the hydrogen in interstellar gas clouds was made of individual atoms or molecules of hydrogen (H2). The answer lay in its UV spectrum, which is difficult to capture from a sounding rocket. Read more...

From Reuters Science News: BOULDER, Colo. (Reuters) - As the United States races to put humans back on the moon for the first time in 50 years, a NASA-funded lab in Colorado aims to send robots there to deploy telescopes that will look far into our galaxy, remotely operated by orbiting astronauts.

The radio telescopes, to be planted on the far side of the moon, are among a plethora of projects underway by the U.S. space agency, private companies and other nations that will transform the moonscape in the coming decade.

“This is not your grandfather’s Apollo program that we’re looking at,” said Jack Burns, director of the Network for Exploration and Space Science at the University of Colorado, which is working on the telescope project.

“This is really a very different kind of program and very importantly it’s going to involve machines and humans working together,” Burns said in an interview at his lab on the Boulder campus. Read more...
