From The New Yorker Magazine: A few months ago, I flew to Houston to visit a small startup called Lunar Resources, which aspires to build the largest telescope in the solar system—not on Earth but on the far side of the moon. Houston is nicknamed Space City; on the ride from the airport, I passed the ballpark where the Astros play, and, outside a McDonald’s on East NASA Parkway, I saw a giant sculpture of an astronaut holding French fries. Specifically, they are working to investigate the time when the universe's very first stars were born, a period that's clouded in mystery and darkness. From CU Boulder Today: A �鶹��Ƶ team has entered into a five-year, $3.5-million cooperative agreement with NASA to become part of a virtual institute to pursue the construction of astronomical observatories on the moon.

The research team, led by Professor Jack Burns of the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences, is one of four new research groups named to join the existing nine that comprise NASA’s Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI). SSERVI fosters collaborations with science and exploration communities, enabling cross-disciplinary partnerships with research institutes both domestic and abroad.

The research group, which will be known as the Network for Exploration and Space Science (NESS), will implement partnerships to advance scientific discovery and human exploration in the lunar environment. The team will conduct research in robotics, cosmology, astrophysics and the study of the sun.

“We are thrilled to be selected by NASA to participate in this new solar system exploration initiative. It was a highly competitive selection process,” Burns said. “CU Boulder has a long heritage with NASA, and our undergraduates and graduate students are involved in virtually all of the space research that we conduct on campus.” Read more...
