Welcome to vocal pedagogy at the 麻豆视频 College of Music!听

The College of Music voice area has a long history and lineage of strong pedagogical training. Past directors of vocal pedagogy include Berton Coffin听and听鈥攖wo of the foremost leaders of vocal pedagogy in the 20th century. In addition to coursework, graduate students have opportunities to teach voice as a graduate teaching assistant and through the Continuing Education program. Assistantships are granted to experienced graduate students and a fundamental part of our DMA program.听

Berton Coffin Voice Lab

The study of vocal pedagogy has broadened to encompass not only classical techniques, but also choral, pop, musical theatre and other contemporary styles. This has been exemplified in the continued study of acoustic science led by vocal pedagogues throughout the country. The Berton Coffin Voice Lab includes VoceVista and electroglotograph technologies that help students understand acoustic science and vocal adduction rates, facilitating research in the field.听VoceVista software is considered one of the most reliable programs for acoustic analysis.听

Singing Health Specialist Certificate听

The College of Music鈥檚 Singing Health Specialist Certificate incorporates study of speech-language pathology, vocal pedagogy, Alexander Technique and sports psychology. This program can be completed by current CU Boulder undergraduate students in addition to their regular curriculum.听听

Nicholas PernaNicholas Perna

Tenor Nicholas Perna鈥檚 voice has been hailed as 鈥渁n impressive sound鈥� and the South Florida Sun Sentinel praised his 鈥渆motionally driven performance鈥� (Houston Chronicle). Perna was a recent finalist for the American Prize for men in opera and has appeared multiple times in recent seasons with Opera Mississippi. Perna was twice selected as a Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Artist singer. Additional stage credits vary from opera roles such as 鈥淒on Jos茅鈥� in 鈥淐armen鈥� and 鈥淩odolfo鈥� in 鈥淟a Boh猫me鈥� to musical theatre roles such as 鈥淩avenal鈥� in 鈥淪how Boat鈥� and 鈥淎rchibald Craven鈥� in 鈥淭he Secret Garden.鈥� Symphonic appearances include Mahler鈥檚 鈥淒as Lied von der Erde鈥� and Beethoven鈥檚 Symphony No. 9.
