This is a stipend-supported internship for Spring 2024. Students will also have the option to receive credit for the internship through LGBTQ Studies. Students will be expected to intern 10 hours per week throughout the semester at History Colorado in Denver (hybrid work may be occasionally available). They will receive a $2000 stipend upon completing their hours. Funds have been generously provided through the Thomas R. Stephens Support Fund.

Any CU Boulder undergraduate student with a 2.0 GPA and 30 hours of credit may apply for LGBTQ Studies Internships. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the Undergraduate Certificate in LGBTQ Studies. Please note that you must be enrolled at CU Boulder the semester that the internship takes place.

Description

Join History Colorado’s Gill Foundation LGBTQ+ Collection Staff to support the collection and processing of items that have historical significance to the LGBTQ+ community. This internship will provide the student with hands-on experience with museum procedures, collections acquisition, artifact handling, database entry, and relationship building between minority communities and state institutions. By the end of the internship, the intern will be comfortable with museum collections procedures, operation of our archival database, and will have gained skills in donor relations.

Possible Responsibilities

The intern will help with cataloging incoming collections in History Colorado’s database system, which will entail data entry about the artifact, taking photos of the artifacts, and archiving incoming documents. During the program, the intern will assist in reaching out to community members and collecting artifacts from those contacted. The acquisition aspect of this position will require research utilizing History Colorado and online sources. Contacting potential donors will require reaching out to various people and organizations with an eye on building trusting, lasting, and respectful connections with potential donors. This will be done through email, phone, in-person visits, and community-building events.

Ideal Candidates

Undergraduate student with a focus in History, Political Science, Gender and Women's studies, Library Science, Museum Studies, or other related field

• Demonstrable organizational and efficient data entry experience

• Detail-oriented with an ability to synthesize information

• Strong communication skills

• Self-starter comfortable being self-directed but must be willing to ask questions and seek direction when unsure

• Able to work out of the History Colorado’s main building at 1200 Broadway, Denver, CO.
