During the speech, he announced plans to retire as chancellor after nearly 15 years in the role and 50 years on campus.

He intends to return to the faculty in the School of Education, where he first began his CU Boulder career as an assistant professor of curriculum and instruction in 1974.

Starting in fall 2024, his primary duties will include serving as the senior executive director at the Center for Leadership and the Quigg and Virginia S. Newton Endowed Chair in Leadership. He will continue to engage with major donors and highly engaged alumni across the university landscape. Also, he will support the transition of the next CU Boulder chancellor.

“It has been such a rewarding and humbling experience to serve as chancellor of Colorado’s flagship university for the past 15 years,” DiStefano said in the speech. “I am so proud of our faculty, staff and students and all that you have accomplished, and I also will treasure the many alumni, donors, parents and friends of the university I was lucky enough to meet. Finally, I want to thank my family for their support and for allowing me to miss birthdays, anniversaries and holidays because of my duties to the university.”

Born and raised in the diverse working-class steel and coal town of Steubenville, Ohio, DiStefano is a first-generation college graduate who began his education career as a high school English teacher near his hometown. DiStefano has spent the remainder of his professional career as a leader within the CU Boulder community, serving as an educator, dean, provost and chancellor.

DiStefano was named chancellor on May 5, 2009. In addition, he serves as the Quigg and Virginia S. Newton Endowed Chair in Leadership, overseeing CU Boulder’s prestigious leadership programs—a role he plans to continue after his term as chancellor concludes.

A resident of Boulder for more than 40 years, DiStefano has been active in local, regional and national organizations, including leadership roles within the Association of American Universities, the NCAA and the Pac-12 athletic conference. He serves on the Boulder Community Health Board of Directors and maintains close connections with numerous other civic organizations, including many where he has held leadership and advisory positions in the past. He holds degrees from The Ohio State University and West Virginia University.

DiStefano has dedicated his career to making CU Boulder a nationally recognized research institution that shapes tomorrow’s leaders and has a positive impact on humanity. He is a proud supporter of Buffs athletics, a champion of democracy and a believer in the value of town-gown partnerships.

He and his wife, Yvonne, have three daughters and two grandchildren.

DiStefano said he expects a national search will occur for his successor and University of Colorado system President Todd Saliman will share more information on the search process in the coming days and weeks.

Watch a video recording, or read the transcript of the address.

window.location.href = `/today/2023/09/26/philip-distefano-retire-chancellor-lead-other-campus-roles`; Participating institutions and individuals will receive free access to a coalition toolkit—including information on how to host watch parties and how to spread the word about the connection between human rights and climate change, and why that connection matters to everyone.

“Climate change is already having impacts that stretch far beyond the foothills of Boulder, Colorado,” said Heidi VanGenderen, CU Boulder’s first chief sustainability officer and co-chair of the summit’s steering committee. “We want to give students of all ages a chance to learn and share their experiences through this event in classrooms and communities across the globe—which will, at the same time, help us to lower our own carbon footprint for the summit.”

Right Here, Right Now Education Coalition partners include the Association of American Universities (AAU), American Council on Education (ACE), Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), Association of Public & Land Grant Universities, Global Council for Science and the Environment, Second Nature, the International Sustainable Campus Network and the University Climate Change Coalition (UC3). Through this coalition, the summit is already connecting with thousands of educational institutions and related entities around the world.

To reach even more learners, departments, classes, clubs and people affiliated with educational institutions are encouraged to join the summit by watching events from their computers and phones—either live or through recordings. Many will organize “watch parties” on their campuses and in their communities to encourage conversations about the content of the summit and, just as important, the human rights-based climate solutions that emanate from its discussions.

Summit organizers are also developing climate education and summit-specific resources for educators and will share them with coalition members as they become available.

“The summit organizers want to thank our amazing partners,” VanGenderen said. “To solve the world’s climate crisis, young people from all nations need the chance to learn about how climate change is affecting their own communities. These organizations are helping to share those opportunities with the next generation of global leaders.”

The summit will bring together thought leaders, youth activists, and scientific, political, educational, cultural and industry experts from around the world for keynote addresses and panels exploring how climate change impacts fundamental rights, including the right to food, safe water, housing and health. The event will include three keynote speakers and more than 30 other panelists and speakers from Colombia, Cameroon, Trinidad and beyond.

 Register Here

Traditional

0

On

White
Wed, 26 Oct 2022 17:10:54 +0000 Anonymous 735 at /lead Top takeaways from State of the Campus 2022 /lead/2022/09/14/top-takeaways-state-campus-2022 Top takeaways from State of the Campus 2022 Anonymous (not verified) Wed, 09/14/2022 - 14:48

Categories:

 From CU Boulder Today

Chancellor Philip DiStefano delivered his annual State of the Campus address on Tuesday, Sept. 13, highlighting the role that universities can play in supporting democracy.

According to recent surveys, 58% of U.S. adults say they’re not satisfied with the way democracy is working in America.
