Emma is a 1st year Ph.D. student advised by Dr. Amy Javernick-Will. She is passionate about food and water security, the improvement of life through infrastructure and technology, and the strong inter-cultural ties that can come from well-executed development. Her interest in sustainable development complexity was fueled by being a part of Engineers Without Borders in her undergrad and working on a few income expansion projects in Kumponda, Malawi.
Why I chose to pursue a PhD
My educational and project experiences have cemented in me the importance of studying the intricacy of global engineering and properly executed aid. Too many well-intentioned projects are never implemented, never used, break with no maintenance plan, or are too expensive because the community's needs and limits were never understood. By pursuing a Ph. D. at UC Boulder, I can learn the necessary skills to research various complexities of this field, including how to objectively and ethically work in this field.
