The Saga of the Volsungs is the medieval Icelandic epic of the ill-fated romances, tragic murders, and larger-than-life wars of the heroes of the Volsung family. Its sequel, The Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok, was also written in the Middle Ages in Iceland, and continues the story with another two generations of legendary Viking chieftains connected by marriage to the Volsung family.<p><a class="ucb-link-button ucb-link-button-blue ucb-link-button-default ucb-link-button-small" href="https://www.hackettpublishing.com/literature/folklore/the-saga-of-the-volsungs" rel="nofollow"> <span class="ucb-link-button-contents"> <i class="fa-solid fa-up-right-from-square">&nbsp;</i> Order Information </span> </a> &nbsp;</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <h2> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--ucb-related-articles-block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div>Off</div> </div> </h2> <div>Traditional</div> <div>0</div> <div>On</div> <div>White</div> Thu, 26 Oct 2017 16:08:11 +0000 Anonymous 984 at /gsll Jillian Porter's New Book /gsll/2017/08/24/jillian-porters-new-book <span>Jillian Porter's New Book</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2017-08-24T15:49:38-06:00" title="Thursday, August 24, 2017 - 15:49">Thu, 08/24/2017 - 15:49</time> </span> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle focal_image_wide"> <img loading="lazy" src="/gsll/sites/default/files/styles/focal_image_wide/public/article-thumbnail/porter_book_economies-of-feeling_aug_2017.jpg?h=8823f61a&amp;itok=wpcA7jf_" width="1200" height="800" alt="Porter book cover"> </div> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-categories" itemprop="about"> <span class="visually-hidden">Categories:</span> <div class="ucb-article-category-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-folder-open"></i> </div> <a href="/gsll/taxonomy/term/44"> feature </a> <a href="/gsll/taxonomy/term/38"> russian </a> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-tags" itemprop="keywords"> <span class="visually-hidden">Tags:</span> <div class="ucb-article-tag-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-tags"></i> </div> <a href="/gsll/taxonomy/term/28" hreflang="en">russian</a> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default 3"> <div class="ucb-article-text" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><p> </p><div class="align-right image_style-medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <div class="imageMediaStyle medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <img loading="lazy" src="/gsll/sites/default/files/styles/medium_750px_50_display_size_/public/article-image/porter_book_economies-of-feeling_aug_2017.jpg?itok=FMqL3DTf" width="750" height="1125" alt="Porter book cover"> </div> </div> <em>Economies of Feeling: Russian Literature under Nicholas I </em>(Northwestern UP, 2017)<p><em>Economies of Feeling</em>&nbsp;offers new explanations for the fantastical plots of mad or blocked ambition that set the nineteenth-century Russian prose tradition in motion. Jillian Porter compares the conceptual history of social ambition in post-Napoleonic France and post-Decembrist Russia and argues that the dissonance between foreign and domestic understandings of this economic passion shaped the literature of Nicholas I’s reign (1825–1855). For Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, and Bulgarin, ambition became a staging ground for experiments with transnational literary exchange. In its encounters with the celebrated Russian cultural value of hospitality and the age-old vice of miserliness, ambition appears both timely and anachronistic, suspiciously foreign and disturbingly Russian.</p><p>Congratulations to Jillian!</p><p><span></span></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <h2> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--ucb-related-articles-block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div>Off</div> </div> </h2> <div>Traditional</div> <div>0</div> <div>On</div> <div>White</div> Thu, 24 Aug 2017 21:49:38 +0000 Anonymous 982 at /gsll
