Congratulations to Prof. Ann Schmiesing, whose book The Brothers Grimm. A Biography was published by Yale University Press in late 2024. The most thorough and important study of the fairy tale collectors Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the English-speaking world, the book was reviewed glowingly in The New Yorker (November 11, 2024) and even made The New Yorker's 100 best books of 2024 list. The book has been widely and positively reviewed, including in The Washington Post. You can listen to an interview between Mel Rosenberg with New Books Network and Professor Schmiesing here. Professor Schmiesing, who currently serves as the vice chancellor and executive vice provost for academic resource management, was chair of the GSLL from 2007 to 2011, and taught a popular course on German fairy tales that is offered today.

The CES Cinema Studies Network will host an online roundtable discussion of Professor Beverly Weber’s new co-authored book: Maria Stehle and Beverly Weber, Precarious Intimacies: The Politics of Touch in Contemporary Western European Cinema (Northwestern University Press, 2020). The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures is delighted to announce that Dr. Adrienne Merritt will be joining our faculty as an assistant professor of German Studies in August. Dr. Merritt is an interdisciplinary scholar with research and teaching concentrations in medieval studies and Black and Afro-German cultural production. She holds a PhD in German from UC Berkeley, an MA in German from the University of Minnesota, and a BA in German and History from the University of Minnesota. Her current research focuses on white consumption of Black German-created works and on Black joy in German Hip hop. This fall, Dr. Merritt will be teaching “German Fairy Tales” in the Honors Program as well as the course “Metropolis and Modernity.”

German PhD student, Elisa Riga, was selected by the graduate school to receive a Graduate Part Time Instructor Appreciation Award for having risen to the challenges presented by teaching during the pandemic. Elisa has gone the extra way to make her course, "GRMN 1601: Germany Today,” a rewarding learning experience for her students and has met the challenges of the pandemic with a lot of creativity and motivation to create an open atmosphere of learning and a dynamic remote classroom. GSLL is happy to have such dedicated graduate teachers and we congratulate Elisa to this well-deserved award!

Congratulations to Beverly Weber for the successful conference Diversity, Decolonization, and German Curriculum!

From March 11 to March 14, the German Program was the virtual host for DDGC 2021: A Virtual Gathering, which focused on antiracism, antiblack racism, white supremacy, and Black resistance in German studies. The conference was organized by Professor Adrienne Merritt (St. Olaf College) and Professor Beverly Weber (UC Boulder). Over 115 attendees attended the conference, which included plenary speakers Professor Tiffany Florvil (University of New Mexico) and Kira Thurman (University of Michigan), as well as workshops on teaching in an age of white supremacy, the use of historical documents in teaching about Black Germans, and rethinking the German studies curriculum.

Professor Patrick Greaney was awarded the College of Arts and Sciences’ Kayden Translation Award for his translation of An Austrian Avant-Garde, the first English-language anthology of post-1945 experimental writing from Austria. The bilingual volume features texts from Nobel-prize winning author Elfriede Jelinek, the members of the 1950s Vienna Group, and a number of contemporary writers, and it highlights the work of women writers. Professor Greaney co-edited the volume with Professor Sabine Zelger from the Kirchliche Pädagogische Hochschule in Vienna and Krems, Austria.

The Kayden Award includes support for a symposium on translation, which will be held in 2022.
