Now that a few students have graduated and moved on to better (?) things, it's time for a new generation of graduate students to pick up the torch. With that in mind, it is my pleasure to introduce the two newest members of the ROCC team: Simon Jones and Ali Sulehria!

Simon is joining us from Allegheny College, where he majored in Physics and Computer Science. He is now joining CU Boulder in the context of our brand-new and very shiny Robotics Program.

Ali is instead joining us from Tulane University, where he studied Biomedical Engineering. He is already diving head-deep into research, having met his future collaborators at first year review of the Quantum Pathways Institute.

Both Simon and Ali will be working on Quantum Control, with Simon focusing on the general side of optimization algorithms and Ali deliving into the specifics of shaken lattice interferometry.

It's that time of the year again: new students are coming to campus and wanting to discover the beauty of Colorado. So, we're back to my favorite hike: on Monday, August 19th, join us for a 4:30 am wake-up to see a beatiful sunrise over Brainard Lake, followed by a leisurely hike to Lake Isabelle and a delicious lunch in Nederland.

Last time we did this hike (2021), we saw a bald eagle chilling on a treetop overlooking the lake and a very close (maybe a bit "too close") moose. No guarantee we'll see either on this hike, but I what I can guarantee are chipmonks, pikas, and marmots!

I'm happy to announce that Jieqiu Shao has just passed his PhD defense.

Dr. Shao took an enourmous risk when he committed to our project on our Shaken Lattice Interferometry project, as neither of us had any background in quantum physics and there was a real possibility that nothing would come of it.

At the end of this long and crazy journey, I'm proud to say that Jay surpassed all expectations by developing quantum optimal control laws that were successfully implemented by our collaborators on the experimental setup. In recognition of all his hard work, Jay received the 2024 Best Thesis Award from the ECEE department. His journey into quantum control will continue at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he has been appointed as a Postdoctoral Research Associate and will continue working on quantum sensing applications.

It's been a long year, yet somehow the 2024 Engineering Expo almost managed to sneak up on us. Still, I'm pleased to say that the Senior Design Team Still Compiling managed to pull off the unthinkable: with just one day to spare, they successfully merged all the subsystems and moving parts (literally) they had been working on over the past year into a single working product, the Ground Based Laser Transmitter to Target In-flight Drones (GiBLiT).

Seeing the excitement in everyone's eyes when the quadrotor finally took off and maintain a steady hover was an amazing feeling, as was seeing the crowd that was drawn to their Expo stall.

I'm proud to announce that the team won the ECEE Most Ambitious Project Award, which acknowledges the fact that the team took on an incredible high-risk project and tackled it though hard work, dedication, and unrelenting enthusiasm.

I'm very proud to announce that Terrence Skibik has just passed his defence with flying colors.

Dr. Skibik is the first student that I've followed all the way through from hiring to graduation, so this day marks a tremendous milestone for the ROCC team. Terry seems to have fallen in love with Colorado (which is hardly surprising) and has managed to snag a job in Boulder County at Maxar Technologies, where he'll be working on optimal estimation problems for satellite imaging.

I should say that one of Terry's greatest accomplishments was going from never having skied before to careening down double blacks at full speed... Since he's staying in Colorado, I look forward to seeing him on the slopes.

Three months really flew by, but Daan was able to learn everything he needed to code up a Q-PRONTO wrapper for open quantum systems.

In addition, he also ran all around the Flatirons (which was his primary goal for coming to Boulder). I hope you enjoyed your stay!

It is my pleasure to welcome Yu Kang Kong into our evergrowing list of ROCC undergraduate researchers.

Yu Kang is currently a student enrolled in my ECEN 2260 class and is looking to find out how large of a step there is from Transfer Functions to Control Theory. Given our new, shiny lab space in ECNW 120, I've tasked him with trying to set up our own personal Flight Lab. This will undoubtedly be a very challenging task, but I'm hoping that a little bit of enthusiasm and determination will go a long way.

This year's Hike Day is decisively later than usual. In fact, it's going to ba a fall hike rather the typical summer hike we've done in the past. To further break from tradition, it will not be at dawn, it will be in Boulder County, and (roll drums) it will center around a giant pot of melted chocolate!

That's right: this is our very first official "Chocolate Fondue Hike", which may or may not become a recurring event based on reception. I provide the chocolate (and necessary equipment to melt it), you provide the dipping supplies. The hike will take place on Saturday, September 30th. We'll walk to Woods Quarry until dusk and make our way back before it gets dark. There' even a chance to see bears on the way back!

Daan will be in Boulder for three months, during which he'll work on the desing of Optimal Control Lws for Superconducting Qubits and train with the cross-country running team.

I'm overjoyed to announce that Thomas Lee Dearing has just passed his thesis defense with flying colors.

Dr. Dearing is the first member of the ROCC team to graduate and has asked whether the ski and hike trips remain open to former members (to which the answer is, obviously, "Yes!"). So far, he has not released his results on the "ongoing investigation into the non-conservation of free time in graduate research", although undisclaimed sources say he has had enough time to commit to a regular game of Dungeons and Dragons.

As of writing, I'm not sure what Tommy's plans are for the immediate future but I have no doubt he'll be successfull in whatever endeavor he'll take on next.
