Now that a few students have graduated and moved on to better (?) things, it's time for a new generation of graduate students to pick up the torch. With that in mind, it is my pleasure to introduce the two newest members of the ROCC team: Simon Jones and Ali Sulehria!

Simon is joining us from Allegheny College, where he majored in Physics and Computer Science. He is now joining CU Boulder in the context of our brand-new and very shiny Robotics Program.

Ali is instead joining us from Tulane University, where he studied Biomedical Engineering. He is already diving head-deep into research, having met his future collaborators at first year review of the Quantum Pathways Institute.

Both Simon and Ali will be working on Quantum Control, with Simon focusing on the general side of optimization algorithms and Ali deliving into the specifics of shaken lattice interferometry.

I'm happy to announce that Jieqiu Shao has just passed his PhD defense.

Dr. Shao took an enourmous risk when he committed to our project on our Shaken Lattice Interferometry project, as neither of us had any background in quantum physics and there was a real possibility that nothing would come of it.

At the end of this long and crazy journey, I'm proud to say that Jay surpassed all expectations by developing quantum optimal control laws that were successfully implemented by our collaborators on the experimental setup. In recognition of all his hard work, Jay received the 2024 Best Thesis Award from the ECEE department. His journey into quantum control will continue at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he has been appointed as a Postdoctoral Research Associate and will continue working on quantum sensing applications.

Three months really flew by, but Daan was able to learn everything he needed to code up a Q-PRONTO wrapper for open quantum systems.

In addition, he also ran all around the Flatirons (which was his primary goal for coming to Boulder). I hope you enjoyed your stay!

With Covid-19 behind us, it's finally time to reopen university boarders and host incoming exchange students. With that in mind I'm very pleased to welcome Daan van der Velden into the ROCC Team. Daan will be in Boulder for three months, during which he'll work on the desing of Optimal Control Lws for Superconducting Qubits and train with the cross-country running team.

As the ROCC lab continues to dip its toes into quantum control, I am happy to welcome Jasleen Batra as our new Undergraduate Research Student. Jasleen will help the transition our Quantum Control research from theory to practice by implementing the proposed control law on an FPGA in András Gyenis' superconductor qubits lab.

This project is the very first step in a very exctiting collaboration, and I am grateful to Jasleen for being the spark that set it all in motion.

It is my pleasure to welcome Mantas Naris into the ROCC group, sort of...

By all intents and purposes, Mantas is a full-fledged member of the Bio-inspired Perception and Robotics Lab here at CU Boulder, where he is currently pursuing his PhD. However, Mantas appears to have enough leftover energy to take on a completely separate project in collaboration with me and Jay on the development of a Julia package for solving Quantum Optimal Control Problems. How he manages to do so in addition to the rest of his research is a bit beyond me, but we are all very grateful for his involvement.

I'm pleased to announce that Marco Pomponio will be joining the ROCC Lab. Marco is currently employed by Craig Nelson at the Time and Frequency division of the National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST). His graduate studies will be supported by NIST and the scope of his research project is yet to be determined.

Please join me in congratulating Jieqiu Shao on completing his M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. Jay's master thesis focused on the Control of Optical Atomic Lattices for Quantum Inertial Sensing, and he will be continuing this line of research as part of his Ph.D.

With this achievement, Jay has officially transitioned from the world of classical mechanics to quantum mechanics. I have no doubt he will approach the remainder of his graduate studies with the same dedication he has shown during his thesis.

Please join me in congratulating Anne Cross Theurkauf on receiving her M.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering. Anne's master thesis focused on the Control of Optical Atomic Lattices for Quantum Inertial Sensing, and she demonstrated great passion, independence, and expertise every step of the way.

Working with Anne has been a real pleasure and I am confident she will be successfull in whatever endeavor she decides to undertake.

I'm pleased to welcome Anne Cross Theurkauf as the newest member of the ROCC Lab. Anne is a MS student working under the supervision of Prof. Penina Axelrad and has proven to be a vital team member in the Control of Optical Lattices for Quantum Inertial Sensing project. Starting next week, she will be focusing on the development of adaptive optimal control strategies for quantum systems as part of her MS Thesis.

I am very happy that she chose to join the quantum control team and look forward to working with her over the next few months.
