ENVD student wins Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation Competition

Majed Al-Ghamdi

Majed Alghamdi, an ENVD sophomore, was awarded the 2018 winner of the HKS award for best hand delineation by a student hand, from the . KRob has been celebrating the best in architectural delineation for 44 years. It is has received international recognition honoring hand and digital delineation by professionals and students throughout the world.

Here's how Alghamdi reached the final iteration of his drawing.

The drawing is an interpretation of the spatial logic and experience of House NA by Sou Fujimoto in Tokyo.

I began the drawing by trying to capture the feeling of being inside a space that is comprised of open platforms. Through analysis of the spatial organization and vertical stratification of the building, I imagined myself there and drew how I felt. I used black for the background and the lines in white to reflect how the building fits with its surroundings. House NA is very open and has glazing, and windows instead of walls, which invites a lot of light inside. The reason I drew all the platforms in different depths and directions is because every level of the case study is made up of different platforms on different heights, which can be very confusing at first. However, because there are no walls separating the rooms. Only the difference in height from each platform separates the rooms, and almost the whole house can be seen from the center of it.

I went through many iterations and concepts to find the one that really conveyed how I understood and felt about the building.
