Engineering Plus hosts virtual design expo
You're invited to the E+, happening this week! The first-year projects design expo has been hosted for over 25 years and is now virtual. Students from 13 sections of GEEN 1400, GEEN 2400, ASEN 1403 and ECEN 1400 created videos to demonstrate their projects, which range from rocket engines to robots to innovative devices for COVID-19 safety.
Come celebrate virtually! Visit the website between now and Nov. 30, and vote for your favorite teams through Nov. 29.

Spring Courses to Consider
Apply for spring “Designing for Defense” course
Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for the spring 2021 “Designing for Defense” course. D4D is an award-winning course sponsored by the Department of Defense. Students get to work on real-world national security challenges in close coordination with national security agencies and local technology mentors. CU has one of the nation’s strongest programs, and has sent teams on paid travel to the Pentagon, Fort Bragg, and to pitch for real-world investment in San Francisco. To apply by Dec. 10, visit the course webpageor contact Rex Lacebywith any questions.
GRMN 3507: Engineering and the Practice of Literature
This course will count for upper-division H&SS credit. Examines the relation between the practices of engineering and the production of fictional worlds in words and images. Focusing on the history of engineering and of literature, the course interlaces these seemingly disparate practices by showing commonalities and shared solutions to common problems. Readings highlight stages in the development of engineering in parallel with literary works from the end of the eighteenth century to the present. May include analysis of media like film and television. T/Th 11:10 a.m.-12:25 p.m. Meets remotely.

Protect Our Herd Award
This week’s Protect Our Herd award goes to Assistant Professor Cresten Mansfeldt and his team of 27 undergraduates, graduate students and research staff who have led the campus’s SARS-CoV-2 wastewater testing this semester. The team conducted sewer sampling at 23 locations on campus to provide an early warning system for the virus, detecting infections almost a week before someone with COVID-19 might exhibit symptoms. The work will continue next semester.
The team includes: Claire Butler, Elle Coe, Rachel Shea, Madeline Karr, Kiersten Maxwell, Jessica Darby, Jeffrey Jones, Emily Saldana, Michaela Alkire, Jorge Vargas-Barriga, Bailey Vigil, Heidi Heuer, Sara Key, Nicholas Freeman, Lauren Elizabeth Nelson, Antonio Feula, Jennifer Liebig, Jacob Lilienfeld, John Maggi, Breanna Real, Gordon Zak, William Johnson, Paul Wilkerson, Lewis Salveson, Kate Tomlinson, Kevin Pulley, and Katelyn Reeves.
The team will receive CU Engineering-branded swag in recognition of their dedication to COVID-19 safety. Want to recognize an individual or group in engineering that’s playing it safe in Protecting Our Herd? Send a brief description of their efforts to kellen.short@colorado.edufor consideration.
