The Denver Metro Engineering Consortium (DMEC) is gearing up for its first summer bridge program — a paid, four-week experience for high school graduates who are starting their STEM education at Community College of Aurora or Community College of Denver.
“Students will get the opportunity to do a hands-on engineering project while strengthening their math readiness and STEM confidence,” said Janet Yowell, the co-principal investigator for DMEC. “Completing the program will also make them eligible for future internships at CU Boulder, CU Denver or other workforce industry partners, such as Lockheed Martin or the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.”
Participants in the summer bridge program, which runs July 5 through Aug. 3, will also earn a $1,500 stipend. .
DMEC seeks to significantly increase the number of engineering professionals from underrepresented groups by linking community college students with academic, social, and financial support — including paid summer bridge and internship experiences — to support their pursuit of a career in engineering.
The consortium is funded by a $10.9 million grant from the Office of Naval Research in the U.S. Department of Defense. The initial partners include CU Boulder, CU Denver, the Community Colleges of Aurora and Denver, as well as local industry partners and national laboratories.
