Grant supports underrepresented students pursuing engineering

A $10.9 million grant from the Office of Naval Research in the U.S. Department of Defense will support five Denver-metro community colleges and two universities in an initiative to increase the number of community college students who pursue engineering careers 鈥� particularly those who come from underrepresented populations.

Video: Meet Shideh Dashti, the acting associate dean for research

Shideh Dashti听is an associate professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering at CU Boulder's College of Engineering and Applied Science. Her research is focused on geotechnical engineering, centrifuge modeling, and designing resilient infrastructure in the wake of earthquakes and climate-related natural disasters. She served as the director of听Resilient Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity Interdisciplinary Research Theme听from 2020 to 2022.听

New quantum lab space in Engineering Center will aid internal and cross-campus听collaboration

Researchers from CU Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will be better able to coordinate their efforts with the recent opening of the听Quantum Engineering Initiative (QEI)听Collaboration Lab on Sept. 26. This new, 1,500-square-foot space in the Engineering Center will encourage cross-campus research and experiments in the high-impact field of quantum engineering.

Engineering community responds to Marshall Fire impacts

The Marshall Fire, which spread throughout much of Boulder County including the towns of Superior and Louisville, became the most destructive fire in Colorado鈥檚 history. More than 1,000 homes were lost, and approximately 6,000 acres burned.听

Chemical and Biological Engineering's Wyatt Shields wins multiple awards including Packard Fellowship

In a banner year that has included receiving five distinguished research awards, Assistant Professor听Wyatt Shields听has been awarded one of the nation鈥檚 largest and most prestigious awards for young investigators: a Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.听

Astrodynamicist and space environmentalist听听(MAeroEngr鈥�01; PhD鈥�05) is among the prestigious 25-member cohort of the听.

Dan Larremore earns NSF Alan T. Waterman Award for work around COVID-19听

The Waterman Award is the NSF's most prestigious award for early-career scientists and engineers, and comes with a $1 million听grant to support the winners' research. Only two or three awards are made each year, nationwide, and past winners have gone on to win all manner of major awards, including Nobel Prizes. CU has only ever had two other winners, including Professor Kristi Anseth in chemical and biological engineering.

Dean Keith Molenaar

Provost Russ Moore appointed听Keith Molenaar听as the college鈥檚 permanent dean in late June听2022. He听said his time as acting dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science provides a glimpse into the broad vision he has for the institution and community going forward听鈥� one that celebrates interdisciplinary research with strong workforce and educational components alongside an inclusive community-building approach.
