Bill Van Atten

After serving in the Marine Corps for 22 years, Bill transitioned to the commercial aerospace industry, initially working for the F-35 program office where he supported the team responsible for defining the requirements for future capability upgrades to be incorporated into the baseline aircraft design. Since 2014, Bill has been a Program Manager at Ball Aerospace where he has mainly focused on developing antennas for a variety of Department of Defense and NASA applications. In this role, he has provided oversight for the design, fabrication, and test of custom antenna products built to customer-defined requirements.

Bill joined the EMP team in 2016 as an adjunct professor. He teaches Fundamentals of Systems Engineering at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His ongoing industry experience allow Bill to enhance his lectures with real-world stories of the challenges and rewards of fielding complex systems.

In his off time, Bill is a private pilot and avid skier. He is a coach for the Eldora Mountain Ski Club where he trains young ski racers in alpine events.

Bill has a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and a Master’s degree in Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins University.
