Biography

Marykate is an internationally experienced process engineer with a 15-year record of success in analysis, research, and development of alternative fuels and breakthrough process improvements. She is currently spearheading government research projects to identify viable renewable energy sources to lessen the country’s dependence on foreign oil and achieve environmental goals. Marykate is also an expert in systems/process design, continuous improvement techniques, cost-reduction strategies and energy-saving solutions. She is known for innovative problem solving, complex troubleshooting and skillful relationship-building with multinational client executives and teams.  Marykate earned an ME in Engineering Management in 2012 and is currently an Engineering Project Manager - Bioenergy Technologies Office at , a DOE Contractor.

What made you decide to pursue a degree or certificate in Engineering Management?
I wanted a career that would leverage my technical expertise and allow me to advance into management positions.

Why did you choose the Engineering Management Program at CU Boulder?
The Engineering Management Program has a great curriculum and world class professors.

How did the program help you in your career?
I was able to confidently transition from a technical engineering position to management role within the renewable energy sector.

What was your favorite graduate EMEN class/professor? Why?
I really enjoyed Barbara Lawton's Leadership course. It helped me understand my management style with strategies that would enhance my strengths and help me mitigate any weaknesses.

What advice would you give a new student in the program?
Take advantage of the expertise within the Program's faculty and staff. Most of them have worked successfully in industry and even started their own businesses. They are a wealth of knowledge.

How would you summarize your experience with the program? 
I really enjoyed the Program and got a lot out of it. I was able to take the courses while maintaining my full-time job and have since advanced into a management role.
