Today’s show looks at a coalition to expand voting rights to immigrant residents in Boulder County, a project developed through the Puksta Scholars program at CU Boulder. The coalition is leading the movement to generate dialogues surrounding our country’s history of voting rights. Through their outreach, they will built the coalition even further to recruit volunteers for a ballot initiative in 2020, sustain our relationship with city council, and run focus groups within communities most impacted by this issue. The coalition strongly believes that every person deserves representation and the ability to make decisions on where they live. the show is hosted by Soraya Latiff who works for the Center for Community Based Research and Learning at CU Boulder. In her role at CU she works in storytelling for the Center and also worked as Project Manager for Puksta Scholars and had the pleasure of working closely with one of this episode’s guest, Emma Piller.

Emma Piller who grew up in Lafayette, Colorado and just graduated from CU Boulder this May with a degree in English and a minor in Spanish and Leadership. Immigrant rights has always been a passion of hers and she aspires to become an immigration attorney. In her time at CU she was a part of the Puksta Foundation Scholarship that promoted civic engagement through scholarships. Her Puksta project explored the immigrant experience in Boulder County and in her third year at CU, Emma and seven of her peers joined together to expand voting rights to residents without full citizenship. In 2017, Emma and the team created a coalition to work in the Boulder community with the intention of generating dialogue on what it means to practice citizenship. Gabo Ortiz-Peña graduated from CU Boulder with his masters in Astrophysics and has been involved with the coalition since December 2017. He was at the INVST kick-off event where they had some great conversations around voting rights, and from there he ended up joining the coalition. He has been mostly involved in organizational and planning work, but also did a bit of outreach last summer.

This month, AMPLIFY host Jennifer Ciplet speaks with guests Nitin Beri and Heidi Harris, both undergraduate students at CU Boulder and leaders in the Swap program.

Swap is a student-run, grassroots initiative at CU Boulder that builds bridges of support and solidarity between Swap volunteers, campus employees, and international students in the Boulder community.

Swap brings together historically and systematically divided campus sectors – such as CU Boulder students and university janitorial and other staff - to share a common learning and cultural experience. Swap also provides conversation partners to CU International English Center (IEC) students, with the goal of helping provide our international friends with the tools to be productive and self-sufficient members of the Boulder community. Swap is a proud program of CU Engage.

This month, AMPLIFY host Roudy Hildreth speaks with guests Carmen Mabee and Karina Adabe, both of whom are current students participating in CU Boulder’s Public Achievement Program as TA’s, or Teaching Assistants.

At CU Boulder, undergraduate students serve as Public Achievement, or “PA” coaches alongside K-12 students in Boulder and Lafayette. Together, students participate in a year-long cycle of inquiry and action around school and community based social justice issues. All participants gain insight on community leadership, the foundations of social change, and the power of relationships.

Public Achievement challenges traditional notions of citizen participation by placing young people in the center of their civic environment. Public Achievement was developed in 1990 by the Center for Democracy and Citizenship at the University of Minnesota (now at Augsburg College). The founder of Public Achievement, Harry Boyte, worked for the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a field secretary with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the Civil Rights Movement. This experience led to the creation of Public Achievement; the impact of young people shaping society through organizing and civic participation is a legacy we continue in our work with PA.

�鶹��Ƶ’s Public Achievement program is housed within CU Engage. CU Engage is CU Boulder’s center for community-based learning and research in the School of Education. PA provides CU Boulder undergraduates with a meaningful opportunity of applied learning that explores education as a tool for democracy and social change.

On the January 23 episode, AMPLIFY host Jennifer Ciplet speaks with three of CU Engage's colleagues from Denver Public Schools to discuss the exciting expansion of their action civics program, known as the Student Voice and Leadership Program, or SVL program. The SVL program nurtures the whole child and supports youth-and-adult partnerships to leverage community assets and create change. The SVL program, as we’ll hear on today’s show, has been life changing for many student leaders in the Denver Public School system. When students discover their core strengths and apply them in real-world experiences through the Student Voice and Leadership Program, school cultures are transformed and young people gain new skills in advocacy, organizing, and civic engagement.

Today's guests are Solicia Lopez, Director of Student Voice and Leadership (SVL) for the Denver Public School District; Ananas Mustafa, Coordinator of the Student Board of Education School Leadership Program Model for Denver Public Schools; and Esperanza Garcia, a high school senior at South High School in Denver and a student leader in the Young African American Latinx Leaders Program, aka the (YAALL) program.

CU Boulder and two other partner universities – UC Denver and Rowan University – have collaborated with leaders from Denver Public Schools to recently receive a 1.4 million dollar grant from the Hewlett Foundation and Jobs for the Future to advance, expand and study the Student Leadership Program in Denver. On today's show, guests discuss the plans to expand the SVL program in Denver, and what role university graduate students and faculty from CU Boulder, UC Denver and Rowan University will play in helping this action civics work move forward.

On the November 28th edition of AMPLIFY, host Jennifer Ciplet and her guests discuss an exciting collaboration between the non-profit community organization Imagine!, which works with people with disabilities, and the �鶹��Ƶ College of Engineering and Applied Science. Today's guests include Professor Melinda Piket-May, CU Boulder engineering student Sarah DaFoe, and Director of Public Relations at Imagine!, Fred Hobbs.

Through this university-community partnership, CU Boulder engineering students develop assistive technology that supports people living with developmental, cognitive and physical challenges. To see examples of the assistive technology CU Boulder engineering students have created with Imagine clients, watch this short video.

CU Engage was excited to learn about this program when Associate Professor of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, Professor Piket-May, applied for and joined the CU Engage Faculty Fellows program. Piket-May was a member of the 2017-18 cohort of CU Engage Faculty Fellows, which included CU Boulder faculty doing innovative, community-based teaching and research from across campus and a wide range of academic departments. Professor Piket-May works with her CU Boulder undergraduate students to integrate engineering theory with real life engineering design problems, especially engineering challenges that could assist people living with disabilities.

Together, we had a rich discussion about the university-community partnership work that INVST and Metro Caring are doing together to deepen Metro Caring's work toward equity and inclusion within their organization.

AMPLIFY host Jennifer Ciplet in the KGNU studio, speaking with Aquetza Program participants Emely Pech-Cruz and Galilea Landa-Posas, along with CU Boulder student and Aquetza instructor Diana Bustamante-Aguilar.

Welcome to the first episode of Season Two of AMPLIFY! On the August 22 Aquetza Edition, host Jennifer Ciplet was joined in the studio by three members of the CU Boulder Aquetza Summer Program. Guests included Diana Bustamante-Aguilar, a fifth year student at CU Boulder and Aquetza instructor; Galilea Landa-Posas, a current Sophmore at Colorado Academy and Aquetza participant; and Emely Pech-Cruz, a current junior at Boulder High School and Aquetza participant.

Aquetza - which means "hold your chin up" in the Mesoamerican Nahuatl language - was founded 6 years ago by a group of CU Boulder undergraduate students. Today, Aquetza provides a free, 10-day summer residential program on the Campus of CU Boulder for participating high school students from across Colorado who have strong ties to Chicano/Latino communities. This summer, in July 2018, the program provided 42 Colorado youth participants with an interactive, academic enrichment experience focused on examining the history, literature, health science, and relevant social and political issues surrounding Chicano/Latino communities.

Aquetza is rooted in a philosophy of education that sees the youth participants as holders and producers of new and valuable knowledge, and the program is designed with this at its core. Aquetza provides its high school participants with a chance to develop new skills and grow and share their knowledge as they become leaders in their communities.
