In August听Clara Straight听(MFA) joined the centenarian club. Clara, an听artist in Kirksville, Mo.,听selected her favorite听works from her private听collection to be exhibited in the Kirksville Arts听Association this summer. Clara still paints,听drives and lives on her听family farm.

闯颈尘听贵谤颈别诲濒补苍诲别谤听(PolSci) of Portland,听Maine, is writing several books: A memoir,听a novel, a collection听of short stories and a听cookbook. Originally from听Manhattan, Jim graduated from high school at听16. His memoir explores听his experience running听a bed-and-breakfast听in Freeport, Maine, for听more than 20 years with听his late wife Glynrose听Friedlander.

For the past听25 years,听Maynard Skinner听(PE;听MEdu鈥�54; PhDEdu鈥�63)听ran the Department of听State exchange program听for the University of听California, Davis, helping听foreign nationals visit听for a three-week period.听Maynard paired the听guests with hosts of similar interests. Maynard,听now 91, was vice chancellor of student affairs听for UC Davis before retiring in 1992. A successful听local politician, Maynard听was on the Davis City听Council for 16 years and听elected mayor twice. He听wrote, 鈥淲hen I was mayor, I brought Boulder鈥檚听open-space coordinator听to visit, [whose programs] we copied], and听Boulder in turn copied听our no smoking in public听places ordinance.鈥�

Ken Johnson (Mktg) worked听as a journalist at the听Grand Junction Daily听Sentinelbefore becoming the owner in 1970.听He continued to put听his degree to work, as听owner of the听Cleveland听Press and Redstone听Castle, a luxury hotel听west of Aspen. Ken听later moved to California听to raise Arabian听horses. Currently in听Massachusetts, Ken听has begun writing a听biography of Walter听and Preston Walker,听the father and son duo听who owned the听Sentinel before he did.

John Lund听(CivEngr;听PhD鈥�67) is a geothermal听energy expert and a听retired emeritus professor and engineering听dean from the Oregon听Institute of Technology听in Klamath Falls, Ore. He听writes, 鈥淚 am currently听working on gathering,听editing and summarizing geothermal country听update papers from all听over the world for the听World Geothermal Congress 2020 to be held听in Reykjavik, Iceland, in听April 2020.

碍补谤濒听骋耻蝉迟补蹿蝉辞苍 (APMath, Fin) published听Reverberations of a听Stroke: A Memoir,听a听book that tells the story听of his struggle to regain听his life purpose after听experiencing a catastrophic stroke in 2016.听Since his stroke, he听has returned to teaching at the University of听Colorado, where he has听been a faculty member听in the mathematics department for more than听50 years.

A month听after graduating from CU,听厂迟补苍听叠辞濒蝉别苍驳补听(Geol) began听a 30-year career as a听research glaciologist听studying ice and snow听in North American听territories. 鈥淚 had a听great career, including publishing over 80听scientific papers and听authoring or coauthoring four books, none听of which would have听been possible without听my CU background,鈥澨齢e wrote. He lives in听the Upper Peninsula听of Michigan, where he听worked for the Cold听Regions Research &听Engineering Laboratory,听Great Lakes Research听Center and the Great听Lakes Environmental听Research Laboratory.听He writes that he鈥檚 lost听track of his former CU听housemates and friends听and would love to hear听from them.

Former CU swimmer听George Foster (Chem)听competed at the 2019听National Senior Games,听held in June in Albuquerque, N.M. George听took first place in the听200-yard individual听medley and the 500-yard听freestyle in the 80 to 84听age group. The Broomfield, Colo., resident听writes that his wife,听Mary Wiley Foster (A&S鈥�58), died in 2014,听and that he meets with听other former CU athletes听weekly for coffee. A听biochemistry doctorate,听George worked in the听pharmaceutical industry听for 30 years.

Arthur White (MBaSci;听PhDEdu鈥�69) was born in听Boulder and grew up on听a farm east of the Valmont power plant. In the听mid-1950s, he worked听as a wrangler for Columbine Lodge 鈥� near听the trail leading up to听Longs Peak 鈥� packing听supplies by horseback听for the CU Hiking Club听before they climbed听Longs Peak. While working on his doctorate, he听was coach of the CU听men鈥檚 gymnastics team,听leading it to a Big Eight听Conference title. Arthur听taught at Ohio State听University for 44 years听before retiring.

The day听after graduating from CU,听闯辞丑苍听颁补惫补苍补驳丑 (惭驳尘迟)听尘补谤谤颈别诲听Gae Mayer听Cavanagh听(Edu鈥�60),听and they built a life in听Jacksonville, Fla. John听worked and owned听businesses in several听industries, including cigars, boxes, insurance,听health care, cars and听vitamins. Gae taught听elementary school.听Now retired, John has听spent the last 14 years听working with Kairos听Prison Ministry in Union听County, Fla., sharing his听Christian religion with听inmates. John writes,听鈥淭his is more rewarding听work than anything I did听in the past.鈥�

In addition听to hosting听鈥淲onderful Words of听Life鈥� on KAAM-AM radio听770 in Dallas,听Nella听Phillips (A&S) hosts听鈥淢oments with Nella鈥� on听YouTube. The one-minute videos provide a听moment of inspiration听for viewers.

In June,听Richard听Wilson (Hist) retired听from the University听of Virginia, where he听taught architectural听history for 43 years. He听will continue teaching a听summer course in Newport, R.I., and on the听lecture circuit. Richard听also is writing a book听on Thomas Jefferson鈥檚听Monticello. He writes,听鈥淭here is still plenty听to do!鈥�

In June, in听remembrance听of the 75th anniversary听of D-Day, retired Navy听Commander听Gary听Forsberg (Psych) sang听at the Brittany-American听and Omaha Beach听American Cemeteries,听as well as Sainte-Mere听Eglise and Luxembourg听Gardens in Paris. Gary听is a member of the听Sounds of the Rockies听men鈥檚 chorus, and a听former member of the CU听Buffoons a capella group.

Ted Hine (Fin)听discovered听and digitized a long-forgotten reel-to-reel tape听recording of his band鈥檚听three-hour performance听at the Buff Room on听The Hill in July 1967 and听distributed copies to听all the surviving band听members. The band,听鈥淥ther Side Of Time,鈥澨齠ormed in fall 1966 and听was active through听the following summer.听Other band members听included听Dick Coburn (PolSci鈥�67; MA鈥�76),听Mike听Collins (ChemEngr鈥�70;听MS鈥�71; PhD鈥�77),听Doug听Hays (Edu鈥�71),听Jim听Fuchs (Psych鈥�75),听Scott听Mascitelli听(A&S ex鈥�69)听and听Lonnie Brummit听(Mus ex鈥�70). The band听started playing fraternity听and sorority parties, and听by early 1967 were reg-ulars at the Buff Room,听Tulagi and the Honey听Bucket. By spring, they听had a record on the听local Top 40 charts.

Steve听Hatchell听(Advert), president and听CEO of the National听Football Foundation听(NFF), was featured听in the book听1st and听Forever: Making the听Case for the Future of听Football,written by Bob听Casciola. A Colorado听native, Steve has听worked with intercollegiate athletics for听most of his professional听career. In 2017, he was听inducted into CU鈥檚听Athletic Hall of Fame.

In 2016,听Steve Volstad (Jour) retired from听his career in communications, most recently听as communications and听marketing director for听UNC-TV, North Carolina鈥檚 statewide public听broadcasting channel.听After 30 days away听from work, Steve knew听he needed something听more: He got a job with听the College of Veterinary Medicine at North听Carolina State University, writing stories about听animals in poor health听and their caretakers.

Judy Crawford听(Edu) writes,听鈥淢y life after Boulder听has been wonderful. I听taught for 25 years, was听elected New Mexico听Teacher of the Year in听1989 and now have had听a second career working听for a nonprofit that funds听drinking water projects听in developing countries.鈥澨齋he married听Richard听Crawford (Mktg鈥�71) and听they made their home in听Santa Fe.

Pueblo,听Colo., resident听Kathleen Hearn听Croshal听(CommThtr;听Law鈥�79) was named听president of the Colorado听Bar Association for the听2019-20 term. Kathleen听spent 16 years practicing听law, including work as a听deputy district attorney in听Pueblo. She was then appointed a Pueblo County听judge for the 10th district,听a role she held until her听retirement in 2011.

Santa Fe听resident听David听Douglas (Law) is founder听of the all-volunteer听organization Waterlines,听which is committed to听providing the world clean听drinking water. Currently,听Waterlines鈥� main projects听are focused in Panama听and Kenya, but since听its founding in 1986, it听has worked with over听700 communities in 15听countries.

Carol Callan (MPE;听MBA鈥�87) was elected president of the听International Federation听of Basketball, Americas听Chapter. She is the听first female to fill the听position for any FIBA听region. Carol is also听the USA Basketball听Women鈥檚 National Team听director, a post she has听held since 1996. Prior to听joining USA Basketball,听she was athletic director听and assistant principal听for Boulder鈥檚 Fairview听High School. She lives听in Boulder.
