On June 1, the CU Heritage Center closed as preparations began for an early-2024 structural restoration of Old Main. The Heritage Center has been located on the third floor of the building since 1985. Pending Board of Regents approval, the Old Main restoration project will include repairs to the building’s exterior walls and windows (see more in our Old Main infographic).

The Heritage Center contains about 40,000 artifacts, and staff will move the entire collection to a temporary location on East Campus by the end of the year to prevent damage to any artifacts during the restoration. While the exhibits and collection will not be available for public view, researchers can make requests or set up on-site appointments beginning Jan. 2, 2024.

“It’s a massive undertaking, but we need to ensure everything is protected,” said Heritage Center director Allyson Smith.

The Heritage Center is anticipated to reopen in 2026, the university’s sesquicentennial year, and will showcase its popular LEGO model of campus, along with new exhibits.
