A digital illustration of the Flatirons against an orange sky.

Every Boulderite knows the beauty of sunset over the Flatirons. As Boulder’s beloved icon, the mountains are inspiration for all types of art, music and even tattoos.

The illustration above, created by illustrator and graphic designer Charlie Hoesly (Anth’17), was a private commission for a fellow alum who wanted a piece that featured the Flatirons. Hoesly creates art pieces that he says are interpretations of things he is passionate about — “like animals, nature and Boulder (Sko Buffs).” He tries to create “intricate illustrations using simple layered shapes,” which is a process he notes he honed in the printmaking department at CU.
