In 1912 students presented George Norlin, professor and Greek department chair, with a pocket watch for significant contributions to the CU sports program. As Athletic Board chair, he instilled the athletic philosophy of 鈥渁 spirit of mutual trust, friendly rivalry and true sportsmanship鈥� into the region鈥檚 intercollegiate athletics programs. Norlin became CU鈥檚 president in 1919 and oversaw the campus architectural master plan, led the university through the Depression and was a proponent of academic freedom and excellence.
