Professor听Timothy Oakes is a cultural geographer of China, working on issues related to regional cultural development, culture industries, tourism, heritage, regional and place-based identities. His work focuses on the ways culture is used as a resource for development and governance objectives, identity politics听and tourism.

He is author or co-author of many articles, chapters and books, including Producing Exemplary Consumers: Tourism and Leisure Culture in China's Nation-building Project, 鈥淟ooking Out to Look In: The Use of the Periphery in China鈥檚 Geopolitical Narratives,鈥� and 鈥淟aser Tag and Other Rural Diversions: The Village as China's Urban Playground.鈥澨�
